Meningitis warning to teenagers

PARENTS in Cornwall are being reminded this sum- mer to encourage their 18- year-old children to get vac- cinated against meningitis and septicaemia.

Those who are due to leave school, or are aged 17-18 and are not in school (born between 1 September 1, 1998, and August 31, 1999), are now eligible. The MenACWY jab protects against four strains of meningococcal disease which causes meningitis and septicaemia, known as strains A, C, W and Y. MenW is one of the most aggressive and life-threat- ening forms and meningo- coccal disease can be fatal. Many survivors are left with life-changing disabilities, in- cluding brain damage and loss of limbs.

The MenACWY vaccine remains the best form of protection against the A, C, W, and Y strains with a 100 per cent effectiveness rate in those that have been vac- cinated so far. The vaccine is provided at GP practices. Julie Yates, of Public Health England, said: ‘We have seen a rapid increase in MenW cases across Eng- land in recent years and vaccination is the most ef- fective way of protecting against infection. Young people are particularly at risk as they are carriers of the disease. Being in con- fined environments with close contact, such as uni- versity halls, hostels when travelling or attending festi- vals, increases the chances of infection if unprotected.’

New president for Lions club

AT a recent social dinner held at Tehidy Golf Club, the mem- bers of the Camborne Redruth & District Lions Club held their annual ceremony of changing presidents. The outgoing 41st president, Viv Broad- hurst, said that the Lions had had yet an- other happy and suc- cessful year in which, due to effi- cient fundraising and generosity from the public, they had been able to donate funds to 25 worthy causes. Viv was presented with the Lions’ wooden spoon and a framed collage of photos depicting the

ASKING people to become self- employed if they want to keep their jobs or telling agency staff they don’t have a right to sick pay are just two of the things employers say to find ways around people’s rights at work, says Citizens Advice Cornwall. The organisation has identi-

fied 10 common things that some employers say to try to mislead workers. In the 12 months to April, Citizens Ad- vice Cornwall helped 1,105 peo- ple with a problem at work. Citizens Advice chief execu- tive Neil Colquhoun said: ‘Un- scrupulous bosses are using ex- cuses to duck out of giving people the rights they’re enti- tled to. People with compli- cated working arrangements such as flexible hours and tem- porary or agency contracts can find it particularly difficult to work out what their rights are, allowing some bad bosses to trick them out of pay and enti- tlements.’

1: ‘You work for us but you’ll need to pay your own National Insurance contributions.’ 2: ‘We can’t afford to pay you

anymore, you’ll have to go self- employed.’

Citizens Advice says: ‘Being asked to pay your own Na- tional Insurance or to go self- employed when nothing has changed are signs of “bogus self-employment” – your boss wrongly claims you are self- employed.’ 3: ‘Your disability means you don’t do as much work as oth- ers, so we’re not going to pay you the minimum wage.’ 4: ‘You were travelling be- tween clients – so we didn’t pay you for those hours.’

Citizens Advice says: ‘Every employee should get the na- tional minimum wage and you should be paid for all the time you spend at work.’ 5: ‘You’re pregnant? Great! But we’re worried you won’t cope so we’re cutting your hours.’ 6: ‘You’re having a baby next year? We’ll need to take you off that important project now.’ Citizens Advice says: ‘Your working arrangements during pregnancy should stay the same unless you ask for a change.’ 7: ‘We don’t have to pay you

redundancy pay because you’re on a zero hours contract.’ Citizens Advice says:

‘Wrong – some zero hours workers are entitled to redun- dancy pay. You need to have been working for your em- ployer for two years or more, usually doing at least one shift a week.’ 8: ‘We need to close for the next two days for stock-taking, so you’ll need to take holiday.’ Citizens Advice says: ‘If your employer needs you to take hol- iday, they should give you twice as much notice as the length of holiday needed. If you aren’t given proper notice, you should be paid and not asked to use leave. 9: ‘You work through an agency, so you don’t get sick pay.’

Citizens Advice says: ‘Agency workers should be paid sick pay by the agency.’ 10: ‘We took you off the rota, so we don’t owe you sick pay.’ Citizens Advice says: ‘If you’ve already agreed to work the hours and you’ve been ab- sent long enough to qualify, you should get sick pay.’
