Beautiful Homes Beautiful Homes Summer time in the garden
SUMMER is the culmi- nation of your expecta- tions. However don’t run away with the idea that you can now sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labours - far from it. Summer is
also the season when weeds get into top gear, when pests really get down to business with your stock and when, if you are not careful, your carefully mani- cured lawns and hedges
take on the aspect of impenetrable jungle. On top of all that, if the season is also dry, you will have to add regular watering to your work- load which, in the event of a hose pipe ban, can cause not a few extra problems.

Of course, gardening can involve structural work too and this is just the time to sort out your boundaries, fences, sheds and other outhouses. So, before you get overwhelmed by all the potential ac- tivity, sit down and plan your activities in order of priority. Set yourself a timetable of work, a daily routine to cover all the daily jobs, a weekly one for those not so frequently re- quired and a special time to tackle the more complex activities.
Lawns will probably be fine with a mow once a fortnight. If the weather is hot and dry, don’t cut the grass too short. It can act as its own mulch and will re- main far greener than that of your neighbour
course abound. Catch- ing infestations before they really get a hold is the best policy here. Vigilance is required. Remove affected leaves and burn them. Pick off the odd caterpillar and as a last resort, be gen- erous with the derris. Always bear in mind however, that you may be killing off beneficial insects as well as the pests, so be careful.
who pops out to shave it twice a week. How frequently you trim the hedge will depend on
the shrubs that form it. Some are faster grow- ing than others. Only you will know this so plan your trimming ac- cordingly. Really fast growing hedges like those of Leyland Cyprus will need weekly attention to keep them from run- ning amok.
Weeds need constant,
almost daily attention. They can pop up with startling speed. The hoe is you best friend here. Carry it about with you and chop off the un- wanted greenery in its prime. If you do this with sufficient applica- tion there will be no need for chemical weed killers.

Biological warfare in your garden can be more of a problem. As with most virally caused human condi- tions, viruses can’t be got at directly. Preven- tion is better than cure, so make sure any stock you buy in is as healthy as possible and observe normal hygiene precau- tions with composts, etc. Rake out the under- sides of shrubs and hedges, keep rose beds clear of fallen leaves, keep the soil well opened up with your hoe and apply plenty of clean mulch material to keep in moisture and keep out the weeds. Al- ways burn infected greenery, don’t compost it. Fungal afflictions are best dealt with by the application of fungi- cides but remember, all of these are harmful to the health of humans, pets, wild animals, birds and fish, so take great care when apply- ing them.
Deadheading
Deadheading your flowing subjects is vi- tally important if you wish to keep them
blooming as long as possible. Even one dead flower left in situ will begin to form seed, will take strength from the parent plant and in- evitably cut down on blooming time.
Having sorted out the regular maintenance jobs, start on propaga- tion of stock. Planting new stock and that for autumn flowering, then get down to the more structural activities.
Repairs and renova- tions apart, this is an excellent time to lay pa- tios, install green- houses, erect sheds and build conservatories. This last is especially useful since it provides the extra space indoors that you need and it also allows you to enjoy the pleasures of your garden all year round. Most garden structures and conservatories these days are available in prefabricated unit form and are astonish- ingly quick and easy to build. Go to a specialist supplier and choose from a large number of sizes and styles. All the preparation you’ll need is to lay a concrete base. You can do it yourself or appoint the supplier as your builder. In no time at all you’ll have that ex- tra room for whatever purpose and have added value to your property as well.
Summer gardening might be hard work but it can certainly bear fruit in a number of dif- ferent ways.
