a trailer and start moving it away from the truck before you undo the chains. I quickly learned why, when the chains tightened, caught my fi nger and ripped it open at the distal phalanx. I was not going to fi x this with some goo and a band-aid so it was off to the emergency room at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for fi ve stitches. Not the dumbest thing I have ever done, those are going to the grave with me, but fortunately not too convenient. May was a fi ve week month and they

ing on, like the retirement party for Nathan Lipfert at the Maine Maritime Museum on 27 April. Nathan had been with the Museum since 1971 and has been an integral part of their success. He is also one of the most knowledgeable maritime historians on the coast. He was looking for more free time to work on his personal projects, but is still with the Museum as a volunteer. During his fi rst week as a volunteer another volunteer had no idea who he was. Fortunately some people are rightfully recognized for what they do and the Museum did it right. At his retirement dinner he received a half-hull of the six-masted schooner WYOMING, a life membership to the Museum and they named the library after him. The Museum also was able to capitalize on the occasion raising over $75,000 for the library. Another fun event this month was the

is a wooden yacht and took two years to complete. The craftsmanship done at John’s Bay is impeccable, as their boats are often referred to as the ‘Cadillac of lobsterboats.’ I always get there early to get photographs and catch up with other attendees. This time I had a long discussion Jim Bartlett of Beverly, Massachusetts about the wooden boats on the North Shore. We talked about some of the local builders and then some of the Maine boats, which are owned there. An- other person I met was Royal Dodge of East Boothbay, who talked about his 46 years in the boatbuilding business in Boothbay and East Boothbay. He had worked with Goudy & Stevens, Norman Hodgdon and Paul Luke. Royal is invited to every launching by Peter because they worked together at Goudy & Stevens back in the early 1980s. The stories were great, but more importantly I realized that these are the people who need to be recognized for their contribution to the boatbuilding industry of Maine. Royal, and the many others like him, were really the back bone of this industry up and down the coast. Often times as a business gets bigger the owner is taken off the fl oor and forced into the offi ce to do sales and busi- ness matters. A few of these men have been recognized, but many more should be. Another fun event was heading up to

Moosehead Lake with Giff y Full to see KATAHDIN. She has a couple of minor issues, which will be addressed this Fall. Moosehead Marine Museum has done a great job keeping her up and if you happen to be up that way take a cruise on her as it is a fun three hour trip around the Lake.
