Is everyone ready to hit the water for

a new season? We have spent a lot more time at the dock now and see people busy “dunking” boats in the water, especially with Memorial Weekend coming up. I even saw the fi rst cruise ship at the dock today! While I’m on the subject, please have a safe and careful holiday weekend and season. This is the time of the year that we start sharing our space with the tourists, on the land and on the water. I saw a picture of Vinalhaven Harbor and fi gured there’s so many boats on the moorings, that you can just jump from one boat to another and not fall overboard. I’m sure that the trap “fi eld” looks the same way in the thoroughfare. The Legislature is starting to wind

down but now the workshops and wording of the new bills are in the process of being fi ne-tuned. D.E.L.A. has testifi ed to more than one bill concerning our fi shery. At this point in time, we are doing our best to rep- resent our membership and industry to keep it healthy and safe for all involved. Some- times, just going to Augusta and getting to the talking table opens up conversations that “need to be had.” I found myself in the overfl ow room with a whole group of fi shermen that were not all on the same side of the bill that was being heard. By the end of the hearing, a lot of them were starting to communicate, simply because they heard what a “neighbor” had to say. It was really quite something to witness. Things have a way of working out if we just take the time to sit and listen to each other. We have one more hearing that is com-

ing right up. The Deep Sea Coral Amend- ment public hearing is on Thursday, May 25 from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Ellsworth High School. This meeting and other area meet- ings are to collect input from the fi shermen and stakeholders that are concerned about the protection of corals in the inshore and

off shore region south of Georges Bank. This protection area could have a huge impact on the fi shing as well. D.E.L.A. plans to be in attendance for this hearing and will also be testifying on behalf of our fellow fi shermen and families. We certainly hope that you attend the hearing if you can, especially if you live in the areas that would be aff ected. D.E.L.A. has been contacted by the

press about what the eff ect of CETA will have on Maine lobster prices. We did an interview for WERU a couple of days ago on this subject. Basically, Canada has a new trade deal with the European Union that gets rid of tariff s on Canadian lobster exports to the 28-nation bloc, which will give Canada a huge advantage over the U. S. One issue that we put out there was how is Canada going to fi ll the demand? It is obvious that Maine lobster was sold as Canadian in South Korea. The importer is accused of importing 18 tons of American lobsters worth $1.9 million in 321 shipments from September 2014 to March of this year and were selling them as Canadian product. Perhaps this is where our MSC certifi cation will come into the verifi cation picture. Stay tuned as the season begins…we will keep you informed. If you have been wondering who will

be taking Robin Aldens’ Executive Director seat at the former PERC, or better known as Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries, it is Paul Anderson of Maine Sea Grant. He will assume the seat on January 1, 2018. I have served with Paul on the Fishermen’s Forum Board for over ten years now and fi nd him a very good person to work with. Paul was chosen by their board of directors. Congratulations, Paul! Our next scheduled meeting is set for at Pat’s Pizza in Ells-
