A look from the balcony at Padebco Custom Boat Builders in Round Pond. The two 23s in the fore ground are new boats, the on forward is an older one in for some minor work and the mould to her left has the third new 23 in it.

At Hadden Boat in Georgetown he has been trying to fi gure out how built his boat. He was told that she was built at Jonesport in the 1930s. She is built down, but Will Frost and Harold Gower, both built this way when asked to. The step in the deck was added later in her life.

C. W. Johnson Inc. has had several major projects this winter. Presently in the shop is ISLAND

LADY, a 42 foot Bruno. She has received a new engine, a 550 hp John Deere. This ne- cessitated a larger shaft. Also they changed out her through hull fi ttings, cut out her stern, repaired the last eight feet of her platform, reworked her bulkhead for easier use which meant lowing the controls and presently they are putting her back together. Also in the shop, is the lobster boat

THREE STARS, which is now 11 years old. Her engine was removed and rebuilt. While in the shop her owner has also done a lot of little repair jobs to make her like new. Previously a 34 Duff y, which had been

stretched to 37, was in to have her engine removed and rebuilt. They also added a new shaft and rudder along with bearings.

Hadden Boat in Georgetown is getting ready for Spring. During the winter Alex headed south

again to work on the ELIZABETH II in North Carolina. She is a replica of Sir Walter Raleigh’s vessel that came to America in the 1600s. She received some new bottom planking, replaced the forward garboard plank, stem knee, pin rails, they pulled her shaft and realigned the struts and engines, and added a number of stanchions as needed. This project kept them busy six weeks. They just completed putting an engine

in a sailboat for a local customer. The engine was a three cylinder Beta, which meant they also had to change her engine beds along with several through hull fi ttings. Out in the yard is JULIE ANN, which

has her engine out so that the rear seal and other repairs can be made. This boat is said

to be a Jonesport-design built in the 1930s, unfortunately no one knows who the builder was. In the 1960s they added a step in her deck. Looking at her lines she defi nitely looks like a Jonesporter and hopefully we can fi nd someone who can identify her builder. Still on the schedule is a schooner in

Yarmouth, designed by Murray Peterson. Last year they redid her decks and this year they need to do her annual maintenance. Alex is actively looking for someone

desiring a 30 foot, mid-1950s Gower built lobsterboat. If you are interested, call Alex.

Washburn & Doughty in East Booth-

bay has launched a tug and has others under construction. Just launched was hull #120, INDE-

PENDENT, a 93' x 38' Z drive tug for Ma- rine Towing of Tampa. She is powered with twin Caterpillar 3516 diesel engines which are connected to Rolls-Royce 205 Z drives. She will be delivered later this Spring. Under construction is hull #121, which

will be their fi rst Tier 4 design, which is about 50 percent complete. To conform to Tier 4 they raised the main deck a foot which will allow for the exhaust treatment and additional tanks for DEF fl uid. Hulls #122 and #123 are also underway.

#122 has had her keel laid and #123 they are starting to set the steel up. Their new fab shop has been working

well. They are now more effi cient since they can build modules more complete than they could before.

Padebco Custom Boats Builders in

Round Pond is like many yards along the coast, scrambling to get the work done be- fore warm weather strikes. In the shop, one of the three new 23s is

done and ready for sea trials. When complete she was then to be delivered to her owner in Annapolis. The second 23 is going together and the third is still in the mould, and both of these should be put together quickly because all of their parts have been made. Also in the shop, was an older 23, hull

#34, built in 1990. The daughter of the orig- inal owner has taken possession and the boat looks almost brand new. The only question was whether they needed to change out the engine. Of the 66 storage customers 20 of them

were built at Padebco. A number of these came back to be refurbished by their builder. A storage customer, which had not been

in the water for the last 10 years, a Bristol 40, has a new owner. The new owner has them getting her ready for the season so they can cruise the coast of Maine. Another boat in storage, a powerboat,

is in to have her Volvo inboard outboard changed out with a Volvo diesel. A 27-foot Padebco jet boat came on

the market and lasted three days before she was sold. Her new owners are having them refurbish her completely and service the engine and systems .
