Forthcoming Events

By Keith Nicol

It’s holiday time in Spain, and not just for us, for the entire month of August, millions of Spanish people take vacation. Over the first weekend more than 6.5 million start to move around the country with almost 4 million headed towards the Alicante region during the first weekend alone. So if you thought parking was difficult before, or your trip through Torrevieja difficult on the single lane N332, August can be a much more time consuming and testing time.

Looking for some late night atmosphere in Torrevieja, don’t forget about the fairground and the Hippy Market which runs until the early hours of the morning. Torrevieja, Quesada and other towns all have their aqua parks open through to the beginning of September and the local Go Kart tracks in La Marina and Orihuela Costa are all there for summer fun and an adrenalin rush. In a slightly more relaxed vain, the monthly Craft Market and Meeting at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales takes place on the 1st Saturday of August and September. It’s free to visit and you can browse and buy many different types of art, crafts, try some of the free workshops or sample some local food and drink.

Torrevieja also has a number of museums worth a visit. The best of these is the floating museum close to the Fishing Zone. The main attractions are the S-61 Delfin submarine, the only Spanish decommissioned submarine that you can visit, along with the Albatros III Patrol Boat Floating Museum. The S-61 Delfin submarine offers people the possibility of visiting the interior of a

In late 1983, Earth, Wind & Fire went on an extended “hiatus”. Although there were noises made subsequently from time to time, the group that had defined its unique sound was gone. Then in 1990, the former EWF guitarist, Al McKay decided to put a band together from the remains of the original group, initially for some special performances in Japan. Calling themselves the “LA Allstars”, the

submarine and imagine how the members of its crew used to live inside the same. The Delfin is a Daphne class submarine given by the Spanish army to the Torrevieja’s Council, thus becoming the “first floating museum” of its type in Spain. Opening hours: until 28th August from 5.30pm to 10.30pm and from 31th August to 18th December from 10am to 2pm. Admission Price: 2€. Minimum height to enter and visit the submarine: 1.15 metres. Telephone: 96 670 4643.

On 30th July in Torrevieja’s Eras de la Sal, original member Al McKay brings his Earth Wind & Fire Experience to the city. Built around legendary Earth Wind & Fire guitarist, Al McKay, and a group of top Los Angeles studio and road musicians is the aptly named “AL McKay’s Earth Wind & Fire Experience”, they are all about the music. Performing hit after hit of the super group’s material, in the original keys with the original feel, the “AL McKay’s Earth Wind & Fire Experience” offer a stunning demonstration of a living, vital performance - with every component of the band, upholding the high standard of excellence that established the original EWF sound.
