1823 Slavery is abolished in Chile.

1931 Paavo Nurmi nicknamed the "Flying Finn" runs world record 2 mile (8:59.6). The world best for men is now 7:58.61 set by Kenyan Daniel Komen in Hechtel, Belgium on 19 July 1997.

1943 Benito Mussolini dismissed as Italian Premier and arrested on the authority of King Victor Emmanuel III.


1961 In a speech John F. Kennedy emphasizes that any attack on Berlin is an attack on NATO.


1964 Beatles' album "A Hard Day's Night" goes Nº1 & stays Nº1 for 14 weeks.

1984 Cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya becomes 1st woman to walk in space.


1985 French DGSE officers Dominique Prieur and Alain Mafart are arrested and charged with murder over the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior which sank in Auckland harbour.


1985 Steve Cram runs world record mile (3:46.32). Hicham El Guerrouj is the current men's record holder with his time of 3:43.13.


1995 Comet Hale-Bopp is discovered and becomes visible to the naked eye nearly a year later.


1997 Scientists announce the first human stem cells to be cultured in a laboratory using tissue taken from aborted human embryos.


2000 Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde supersonic passenger jet, F-BTSC, crashes just after takeoff from Paris killing all 109 aboard and 4 on the ground.


2005 92nd Tour de France: no winner; Lance Armstrong retires after winning a record seventh consecutive victory but disqualified in 2012 for doping.


2016 103rd Tour de France won by Chris Froome of Great Britain.
