POLIO ALERT

THE RYDE ROTARY PHOTO COMPETITION

WHY DID WE DO IT?

to play a part in energising the ‘End Polio Now’ fundraising campaign that takes place throughout the year on the Isle of Wight and everywhere around the world where Rotary is established.

With enormous thanks to the generosity of the management at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Using her Samsung Galaxy Smartphone for the task, Stella Taylor of Bembridge was declared the winner of the event. She is now the very pleased owner of a free Family Ticket for the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

BOB’S EUROPEAN CYCLE RIDE

Bob’s European Cycle helps to End Polio!

It’s quite a brave thing to do – to cycle across Europe – whether for charity or not! Bob Mussellwhite of the Rotary Club of Fareham though is training hard for a Rhine and 8 Nations cycle ride.

He’s not doing it for sporting reasons though, although he will doubtless have fun on the way, but to help the Rotary END POLIO NOW campaign. He’s not long returned from India where he helped immunize children against this dreadful disease which helped to motivate him, along with friend Andy Crowe, to literally go the extra mile and cycle this summer across Europe raising funds along the way.

The Eurovelo Rhine Cycle Route runs alongside one

of the longest rivers in Europe - from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea. This year is the 200th anniversary of the bicycle invented in 1817. To celebrate this anniversary many events will take place along the Rhine, especially in Baden-Wuerttemberg, the birth place of the bicycle.

All the funds Bob can raise will go to support the End Polio Now campaign.

It’s a mass immunisation

project, started in 1988, which has reduced the cases of polio from over 1,000 per day 30 years ago to just 37 in 2016. There has to be a clear 3-year period without a case of polio to be sure the virus has been beaten so immunisation has to continue.

To help Bob raise the vital funds you can sponsor

him by going to MyDonate.bt.com and searching for Bob Mussellwhite and every pound that he, and other Rotarians, raise will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

We will let you know how he gets on as the summer

progresses but we hope you will consider supporting this worthwhile Rotary cause two End Polio Now!
