MAY 2017 • COUNTRY LIFE IN BC A good season for

BC bull sales Strong calf prices have positive influence on bull prices this Spring by CATHY GLOVER

bought two others for $5,500.00 each.

WILLIAMS LAKE – Bull sale season officially wrapped up at the 80th annual Williams Lake Bull Show and Sale on April 12-13 and prices remained strong from start to finish this Spring. “There was excellent

interest,” says BC Livestock Co-operation Association auctioneer Larry Jordan. “The ranchers are seeing that bull power is more than 50% of their decision and they are trying to source the best bulls they can get their hands on.” With seven-weight calves

bringing $2.00 per pound, he adds, “ranchers can’t afford to have a poor bull,” and that’s led to some aggressive bidding at the sales. Tom Dewaal and Brad Chappell’s Harvest Angus/ Heart of the Valley sale set the bar high early on with three bulls selling for $14,000.00 or better at their March 11 sale. A week later, even US

buyers were giving ranchers a run at BC-bred bulls when the Spear Ranch out of Loomis, WA paid $7,500.00 for the top seller at Wayne Hughes’ Angus Advantage sale in Kamloops. Another two Tafika-bred bulls sold to Douglas Lake Ranch for $7,000.00 each. The White Fever Charolais Bull Sale on March 24 in Williams Lake saw its high seller go to Ellis Cattle Co. for $6,250.00. Gary Andrews and Pablo Mountain Cattle Co.

Two bulls topped the Best Bet Bull Sale on April 1 for $9,000.00 each. Peter and Sharm Philip bid up one of Mitchell Cattle Company’s Red Angus, while Squaw Valley Ranch anted up for one of Mitchell’s red Simmentals. Pooles Arrow Ranch paid $8,750.00 for another red Simmental. Crosby Cattle Co. sold Black Angus bulls for $7,750.00 each to Woodjam Ranch and to Garrett Ranch. A sunny start to the

Vanderhoof All Breed Sale on April 8 had BC ranchers in a buying mood as well. A capacity crowd watched as a two-year-old bull from Southside Charolais (Burns Lake) sold to John Chomiak of Mundare, AB for $5,900.00. Copper-T Ranch sold one of

their Hereford consignments to Bar WK Ranch of McBride for $5,800.00. The top Red Angus went to Jackson Stock Farm for $5,500.00. He was bred by North 40 Red Angus of Vanderhoof. Ludwig Farms’ Black Angus bull was purchased by Dave Andres for $5,400.00. Crosby Cattle Co. sold their Simmental entry to Craig Steiner of Fraser Lake for $5,700.00.

The sale committee reports

that Hereford bulls averaged $4,875.00; Angus, $4,196.30; Simmental, $4,125.00 and Charolais, $3,871.43.
