Experience the Benefits of

their health. Types range from self-care (such as the use of multivitamins, herbal supplements and/or essential oils) to treatment by naturopaths. Such treatments often include detoxification therapies, the most popular being the colon cleanse or colon hydrotherapy. The colon (part of the gastrointestinal system) is home

to billions of microflora (bacteria). Besides forming stool, the various beneficial bacterial organisms living within the colon and digestive tract are important for proper nutrient absorption, maintaining pH balance, signaling appetite and preventing the overgrowth of potentially dangerous bacteria. This is why maintaining a healthy colon is an essential aspect in one’s overall wellness. While the digestive system has its own processes for

removing waste, some individuals may struggle with diges- tive issues due to poor gut health, allergies or inflammation within the digestive system. It is estimated that Irritable Bowel Syndrome affects 20% of the adult population worldwide, and chronic constipation is one of the most common gas- trointestinal problems in the U.S. (DrAxe.com, 2015). These problems are especially common among people with poor diets, women during pregnancy, older adults, people recov- ering from surgery and those taking medications. For individuals interested in seeking alternative medical

treatment (such as colon cleanses) in the Triangle area, one option is the Alternative Health Center of Cary.

As with all treatments, whether traditional or alternative, it helps to prepare prior to your visit. Bring a list of the concerns you would like to address and a list of the treatments you have tried in the past. If you are not familiar with a procedure, ask questions and find out what you should expect, before, during and after treatment. It is import- ant to develop a healthy and open dialogue with your treatment provider, so speak up during any treatment so any concerns can be addressed.
