Lydia Slack is a 25 year old hill farmer’s daughter who grew up surrounded by hills, animals and not many people.

Lydia is a multi-talented young woman who worked as a volunteer with the charity Project Trust in Swaziland before gaining a First Class honours degree at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester.

Gracing the catwalk in London Fashion Week, lambing sheep and jetting off to New York to take up an internship at the United Nations Headquarters are all in a week’s work - quite literally.

Lydia is also the funniest stand-up comic to appear on the stage at an Inner Wheel conference.

An audience of 2000 Inner Wheel members laughed till they cried as she told us of the events of her earlier life in the wilds of the Peak District.

Loneliness - as friendship with the only girl of a similar age was forbidden.

She was the grand-daughter of a neighbouring farmer whose Hereford bull had escaped into the field where seven of Lydia’s grandfather’s Fresian cows were grazing!!! That was 34 years previously.

Lydia had high hopes of some new friends when her mother offered Bed and Breakfast at the farm. Most of the guests were newly married couples who locked themselves in their room. Mrs. Slack explained to Lydia that the young brides all had asthma.

gs are trained to help with a range of ay tasks including retrieving items and ing a washing machine. These tasks their partners’ independence and ence.

Our dogs are trained to help with a range of everyday tasks including retrieving items and unloading a washing machine. These tasks boost their partners’ independence and confidence.

As a teenager Lydia caught the eye of a young farmer called Albert Grimshaw.

At a sheep auction in Buxton, Albert smiled at Lydia across the auction room. She smiled back. Albert winked - Lydia winked back. Albert waved - Lydia waved back enthusiastically - and found herself the owner of a flock of sheep.

These were just some of the hilarious tales that Lydia recalled. No wonder that a 17 year old Lydia had won the “Best Speaker” award at the National Federation of Young Farmers Club’s national final.

Thank you, Lydia. You brought a ray of Derbyshire sunshine into our lives.

Audrey Davies D5 Annual General Meeting

The Association Annual General Meeting took place on Wednesday morning. President Zena Coles introduced the Executive committee seated on the platform and the Members of Council (or their representatives) of all our 29 Districts. These members represent the Governing Body of the Association of Inner Wheel Clubs in GB&I .

Following the acceptance of the minutes of the 2016 AGM and the Report of Council, the meeting proceeded to the Reports of the Executive members.

This year there were five reports from Executive members and they are detailed in other areas of the Magazine.

This year there were no proposals submitted so the meeting moved on to discuss three General Motions. The first from District 20 proposed that the title “Club Correspondent” be changed to “Club Communications”. Speakers from the floor offered other alternative titles but the Motion was not carried.

The second General Motion proposed by D26 asked that a fourth object be added to our Inner Wheel objectives “speaking out on behalf of women’s issues” . This too failed to get a majority.

The third General Motion proposed by D5 sought to appoint a professional marketing company to promote Inner Wheel and increase membership. Although the motion was not carried it did generate positive discussion.

One of our younger members explained how they had managed to recruit a younger age range to their club, which had 44 members.

A heartening end to our 2017 AGM. Enid Law

12. Municipality of the mountains is at this stronghold? (12 6 ) 15 International Service Report

Ann Acaster began her third and final annual report ‘wearing’ hiking boots, having started her 3 year term of office in comfy slippers, then second year with walking shoes. Once again she had loved visiting the Districts and International Service Rallies and our International Inner Wheel President, here with us today, Oluyemisi Alatise - asked us all to ‘Touch a Heart’ – which our ladies had done, for International Service.

Ann thanked us all for our hard work during the year and found reading our annual reports was a humbling task. Having already mentioned ‘Touch a Heart’, our reports really did exemplify Yemesi’s theme. Part way through the year we received the good news that we could continue knitting our lovely little teddies, possibly the only toy many overseas children ever received, seen or owned.

We all have very different International Service Rallies or events but all aiming to ‘Touch a Heart’. The service we give as individual members is very varied. Working in charity shops, holding supermarket collections, or as charity ambassadors and speakers.

Projects were visited or supported in the Gambia, Uganda, Malawi, Jaipur, some alongside Rotary such as Water Aid, Lifestraws, Aquaboxes, Shelter boxes, Trade Aid and Jaipur Limb.

We had supported our January 10th International Inner Wheel Day – holding coffee mornings for Parkinson’s, Inner Wheel choirs performed, and Ann loved the idea of a gift for the first baby born in a particular hospital on 10th January. There were church services and help at special needs centres, just a few of the many activities happening across Great Britain and Ireland on our special day - not forgetting that these activities were happening simultaneously all over the Inner Wheel world.

We are in touch with Inner Wheel clubs in Australia, India, New Zealand, Europe, Nepal and Sri Lanka, some even visiting. Letters, e-mails, Christmas cards, Twitter and Facebook members keep in touch or visit Inner Wheel members in Australia, Sweden, New Zealand, France, Argentina and Bali. Strong links with Rotary exist and many of us hold events together. We sponsor children, adults and schools and we have sent donations to the recent natural disasters in Haiti, Italy, New Zealand and Africa.

We’ve collected over 2000 baby blankets, 2,500 baby jumpers and 1,500 knitted baby vests. 741 full bags of girls’ and boys’ clothing including football shirts. Many items of adult clothing, 1000 books, 600 knitted dolls. 200 sacks of bed linen, blood pressure apparatus, commodes, computer keyboards, hairbrushes, combs, electrical cables, 1000’s ink cartridges, mobile phones, filled shoeboxes and wheelchairs were also donated.

School in a Bag raised a magnificent amount of £119,206,75 -some of it in the time covered by this report.

In total we raised £288,000 for International this past Inner Wheel year supporting 250 different Overseas Charities.
