Innerwheel Conference 2017 - Wednesday Association Treasurer’s Report

Katie Dalton was presenting her first Finance Report to Conference. The figures were in respect of the year ending June 2016. She was pleased to report an increase in Membership dues owing to a number of new members but this was somewhat offset by the reduction of interest rates. Total income was £232,085.

On the Expenditure side, the figure of £249,903 showed an increase of £6,162 as a consequence of higher staff costs and fares to attend meetings. While there was an overall deficit of £11,955, in reality that was less than 1p per member. This brought the figure into perspective.

Katie provided a clear explanation of these figures, reminding Conference that among other things there had been an increase in staffing in Warwick Square to three full time members of staff and a part time cleaner. Sales of Inner Wheel merchandise had shown a drop from the previous year. The Conference in Glasgow had recorded a surplus although the Conference Fares Pool account had recorded a deficit

owing to higher travelling costs and the greater distance travelled by many delegates. It was important to realise that a proportion representing the salary of one full time employee was charged to the Conference account from various other areas. The final subvention from the Glasgow Conference had come too late for inclusion in these accounts.

Net assets at 30th June 2016 stood at £662,862. Fixed asset investments held long term and current assets which could be used if required made up the bulk of the sum. This provided a very solid financial basis for the Association.

Katie briefly covered charity monies raised in the year to June 2016 as well as mentioning insurances which had shown a decrease. Members were pleased that Council had agreed to keep the capitation fee for this year at the same level. What makes a good financial report? Surely one that is understood by those in the audience who are none too good with figures. Katie succeeded admirably in guiding members through the

Report From The Constitution Committee

As Convenor Betty Roberts explained, this was the first time the Constitution Committee had been given the opportunity to report at Conference. She felt almost apologetic that this committee could not report on monies raised and acts of service as their role might appear somewhat low key. Yet their work was vital in ensuring the smooth running of the organisation.

Often Clubs feel the need to contact the Constitution committee when they are unclear about the rules or matters in the constitution. What might seem a simple enquiry from a Club could have ramifications for the whole organisation. Much time and effort needed to be put into finding acceptable solutions in keeping with the aims of Inner Wheel.

Betty felt Clubs sometimes found the rules restrictive but could take the opportunity to submit proposals for change to Conference. Ways should be sought to make the running of Clubs and Districts easier. General motions on topical issues were also welcomed as it gave members the chance to make our voice heard in the wider community.

Proposals to International Inner Wheel for the Convention were also important and the Constitution committee spent a considerable amount of time scrutinising these and advising Clubs on how their delegates might vote.

Ensuring that guidelines are always up to date and simplifying forms was also an important task. Registration for proxy vote holders at conference had also been modified. The key word was modernisation and together with the Membership and Development committee, Betty’s committee was looking at the possibility of satellite and new generation clubs.

In conclusion Betty expressed her thanks to Jilla Parsley (D7) and Elizabeth Norris (D5) and the ladies at Warwick Square for all their help, not forgetting the numerous cups of tea and coffee.

complexities of the accounts. A sense of humour, a thick skin and the odd refreshment had helped her through her first year. She thanked Past Treasurer Liz Thomas, her committee members Karen Davies (D5) and Anne Williams (D5) and the District Treasurers for their hard work over the past year.

ASSOCIATION EDITOR’S REPORT - ALMOST A MILLION INNER WHEEL MAGAZINE SUMMER 2017

Association Editor Enid delivered her last Home Service Report. During her three years in office, Enid, with the help of her Publication Committee members has, successfully produced nine Association magazines.

No mean task! The magazine is the main communication tool between Club members and the public at large.

Enid acknowledged the amount of effort made by club members in providing service in the local community and nation wide. Seizing any opportunity to help others, members sing, dance, cook, and brew gallons of tea, often wearing silly socks.

Links with other organisations are maintained - helping to run events like Kids Out and Youth Speaks with Rotary for instance. Members act as distributors and Poppy sellers for the British Legion, collect for food banks and support the League of Friends in local hospitals. Members raise a staggering amount of money by making sure that fund raising is FUN - dreaming up novel ideas like “A Teddy Tombola” or a “Scarecrow Competition” !!?? The more daring attract sponsorship by exploits such as sky diving, or braving a wing walk.

Although all of this is great fun it

involves a huge effort by members who support deserving charities both locally and nationally. The two Association charities - Parkinsons and BEAT have received 100% support . In addition, all clubs have supported their District Chairman’s charity - resulting in an amazing total - to be revealed later.

Moving on from the Home Service Report, Enid told us of the joys she has experienced during her three years as Association Editor: The Club Newsletters and the District Magazines are the result of the effort put in by Club Correspondents and District Editors. These publications give insight into

the activities of individual clubs and help to spread the message of the fun and friendship that we share. They also give details of the speakers that cover a variety of subjects and of the outings enjoyed by members. We need to to let potential members know what they are missing!!

In conclusion, Enid thanked all those who have helped her on the way. The Club Correspondents who keep their members and the local community informed of IW activities. To District Editors for setting up websites, producing magazines and compiling Home Service Reports, to Philomena

Membership and Development - Committee Report - An Amazing Year

Membership and Development Committee Chairman Trish reported on the feedback received from Membership Officers in GB&I.This had enabled the M&D team to share useful information with District officers.

Each month a Newsletter had been sent out suggesting ways of attracting and maintaining membership in clubs - with the aim of encouraging forward thinking.

District Membership Officers were thanked for creating their own Inner Wheel posters and for revamping hand outs for new and potential members. Trish stressed the importance of letting the public know of all that Inner Wheel members do for the local community and on the International scene The International President’s theme “Touch a Heart” has been practised by members throughout GB&I.

Many Membership Officers have held ”get togethers” for the exchange of ideas. Or held coffee mornings where prospective members have been invited to meet and learn of the fun and friendship that is enjoyed in Inner Wheel. Ideas for new merchandise have enabled Districts to keep the sales tables interesting.

One District, in an attempt to make the name of Inner Wheel familiar to the general public, have organised a mass planting of our rose “Inner Wheel Forever”. Planted in high profile sites across the District the roses are donated by members - often

in memory of a loved one. These roses will give pleasure to all who see them and allow the District to tell the community about Inner Wheel.

Trish asked delegates to take note of the activities of members as illustrated in the many photographs on display. All designed to spread the word of Inner Wheel friendship and service.

In conclusion Trish thanked President Zena and Vice President Liz for their input into the Committee. She thanked District Membership Officers for their contributions and especially her Committee members Anthea Tilsley, Pam Boyes and Pam Hull for their work in collating information from their respective zones. Finally she thanked Administrator Melanie for all her work with the Committee.

Members of the Membership and Development Committee were invited to join Trish on the platform to be acknowledged.

Audrey Davies D5

Hagen for her work in producing the Talking Magazine, to Melanie, Lisa and Helen for their help -and Caroline Morrice for helping them to produce the Association Website and Face Book page.

And finally, Enid thanked the members of her Publications Committee - currently Audrey Davies, Elaine Morris and MOC Dorothy Cree who joined her on the platform.

Enid had not forgotten to reveal the amount raised by members for good causes in GB&I …..£970,999.03. WOW!!
