F‘Tis the Season… I
or Trade Shows BY BOB GLENN, EDITOR
t’s been a busy Spring season for trade events. Here’s our perspective on two recent events, CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017 and the AWRF Spring General Meeting.
ConExpo: A Technology Tour With over 2,800 exhibitors covering more than 2.5 million square feet indoors and out, CONEXPO-CON/ AGG 2017 was truly huge! We visited a wide range of lifting and rigging exhibitors, and also checked out a new feature this year called the Tech Experience, which included both speakers and exhibitors with interactive demonstrations. Te Tech Experience pavilion was swarming with
visitors. In the “Tech Talks” area, we heard James Benham, a construction technology consultant, give an exceptionally energetic talk about the need for the construction industry generally to invest in technology, as the returns on that investment are real. You can read more about that in our feature article “Investing in Technology” in this issue. And in a very popular session, Mike Rowe from the
TV show Dirty Jobs gave remarks on the importance of educating the next generation about opportunities in construction. While businesses struggle to find appropriately skilled workers, many high school students who might find very rewarding careers in construction aren’t aware of that path – and he’s one voice trying to change that.

Te manufacturer of radio controls offered a chance to operate a model bulldozer or tower crane using their technos A transmitter. “We really enjoyed being part of the Tech Experience. We had constant traffic,” said HBC- radiomatic’s Toni Bluemlein, adding that they “reached a number of attendees who were unaware of the significant advances related to industrial remote control technology now available.”
Among the lifting and rigging exhibitors, many were
showcasing new products. You can learn more about those in our What’s New and News sections – and if we missed yours, please let us know and we’ll be glad to cover it! Among the busiest exhibits in the Gold Hall were training simulators where visitors lined up to get their hands on the latest technology. CM Labs displayed five operator training stations at their booth, including training modules for mobile crane, tower crane, crawler crane, overhead backhoe loader, excavator, wheel loader, overhead crane, and
