adversity...In any century. In
this year’s Mainly Mozart Festival, presentedthrough June 25, there are myriad of performances throughout San Diego. Each will deliver a diverse line-up of artistic selections featuring performances by concertmasters and principal musicians from our most esteemed orchestras. For almost 30 years, the Mainly Mozart Festival has become one of our country’s most cherished musical festivals. Under the direction of Music Director Michael Francis, the festival continues a riveting six-year musical journey through the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. “This is not just a small-scale six-year journey of looking at someone’s life.
Seeing what Mozart achieved in 35 years is a lesson to all of us in how to use time wisely. It is an object lesson in how not to be abject in use of the time one is given,”stated Francis. The season will showcase Mozart, age 17 through 21, during the period in which
the glow of his early successes had dimmed. The prodigy had left his father’s protection and faced numerous challenges and obstacles: Unemployment, uncertainty, shaken self-esteem, depression and money woes. The 2017 Festival presents signature works of Mozart and other classical composers who triumphed by continuing to produce astounding musical works of great depth. Mozart’s work during this period took many forms, including violin and piano concertos, symphonies, sonatas and opera, considered compositions among his very best. The theme will also carry through into the Music & the Mind series, presentations discussing music’s impact on social and psychological issues.
Spanning 24 days, the Mainly Mozart Festival offers a tremendous amount of opportunities to rediscover or experience anew his music.
THE MAINLY MOZART FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCESare June 10, 15, 17, 18, 22 and 24. A se- ries of six performances by the all-star Festival Orchestra, performing with some of the world’s most esteemed soloists in the Balboa Theatre and at Centro Cultural Tijuana.
MUSIC & THE MIND takes place from June 9 through 11.A weekend ex- amination of the relationship of music and the brain including presentations on Overcoming Trauma with Music, Overcoming Cognitive Disabilities with Music and Rediscovering their Voices: Bridging the Disability Gap with Music Technologies. Music & the Mind is part of the three-dayGenius Weekend, which features additional programming.
SAN DIEGO MAKES MUSIC onJune 11. This is a community celebration of the vigor of music featuring the Festival Orchestra accompanied by San Diego’s adult amateur musicians
and student musicians under the baton of Maestro Michael Francis.
MAINLY MOZART CELEBRATES 25 YEARS IN MEXICOonJune 17through 19. A three-day event including a day of incredible concerts in Balboa Park and two days in Tijuana featuring a special performance by the Festival Orchestra, gourmet meals from top chefs, exclusive parties and excursions. Space for this event is extremely limited and is offered only to members of Club Amadeus.
SPOTLIGHT SERIES 2017 takes place onJune 2, 3, 23 and 25. Three Spotlight chamber music perfor- mances to open the Mainly Mozart Festival and three closing chamber music concerts in La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe and Carlsbad is the finale to the M.M. events.
