COUNTRY LIFE IN BC • MARCH 2017

Designed for In Furrow and On Land operations, the EO/LO are robust ploughs requiring lower lift requirements than other brands. The 300 heavy duty head stock provides the necessary strength for smooth reversing. The Kver- neland unique steels and the heat treatment of the complete plough guarantee the longevity.

THE PROFESSIONAL SOLUTION.

Growers Association acknowledges growers who have produced outstanding crops in the preceding year. This year, one soft fruit grower and one apple grower were recognized for their superior skill in producing fruit. Presentations were made at the annual BC Tree Fruit Horticultural Symposium in Kelowna on February 15. “It is always a privilege to be a judge and tour these top orchards,” says Charlotte Leaming, field services horticulturalist with the BC Tree Fruits Co-operative, as she presented the awards. “It is never an easy decision as only the best growers having a good year are nominated. In the end, judges had to single out two growers whose orchards shone a little brighter.” The judges consider fruit quality and

production but look at other aspects of the orchard as well, such as the number of acres the grower manages and techniques or innovations that are used in production. “We are looking for an overall impression of a vibrant, consistent, productive, lean, mean, fruit-producing machine,” says Leaming. Cherry grower Paramjit Gill, who has five

acres in the Ellison area of northeast Kelowna, received the soft fruit award. Gill’s orchard was planted in 2005. “He worked hard on his split prevention

program this year with outstanding results,” Leaming noted, referring to the wet June 2016 weather that had the potential to cause cherries to swell and split making them worthless. “His overall production was nine tons per acre and he ended up with only 12% culls.”

Apple growers Tahir and Sajid Raza farm 20

acres in Lake Country with their families. They received the Golden Apple Award for 2016. The Raza brothers planted 10 acres of their bare land in 2011 with follow up plantings in 2012 and 2013. Notably, the young trees have not yet reached their full production potential. “They still produced 59 bins per acre,”

Leaming says, “with excellent fruit size and exceptional grades.” “One of the impressive aspects of this

orchard is just how much work the family did themselves,” says Leaming. “Everything from doing their own budding to installing irrigation, building the trellis system and even manufacturing the trellis clips was done without hired labour until the first harvest.”
