POSTERS IN IMAGING & THERAPY PRACTICE

FOR KNEE X-RAYS IN CLINICAL PRACTICE Fiona Latchum, Supervisor: Andrew Tootell, University of Salford

A STUDENT SELF AUDIT ON REPEAT RATES

The need to repeat x-rays consequently results in higher radiation exposure to patients. Clinical audits help establish the cause for repeat and highlights areas for improvement. The aim of this audit was to compare the individual repeat rate for knee x-rays against a standard, to determine the current level of practice. The standard repeat rate was 8.6%, taken from research by Clark and Hogg (2003). Data was collected over a two week period in the orthopaedics department of a local NHS hospital. In total, 67 adult radiographs were collected, including a combination of anteroposterior (AP), lateral (LAT) and skyline (SKY) knee projections. Comments were provided to explain the reason for repeat. Out of the 67 radiographs, 12 were repeated, resulting in a calculated repeat rate of 17.9%. Continuous clinical audit ensures standards are maintained, highlights areas to be

developed and improves patient care. https: //www.sor.org/ITP-posters

APPENDICULAR SKELETAL RADIOGRAPHS: CLINICAL AUDIT Cesar Martin Rodriguez, Student BSc (Hons) University of Salford, Supervisor Dr Andrew England

A STUDENT RADIOGRAPHER’S ACCURACY IN ‘RED DOTTING’

An audit was carried out to assess a third year student radiographer’s competence in red-dotting radiographs of extremities. This study also differentiates abnormality detection between adult and paediatric examinations. The audit presents an accuracy of 92.6%, sensitivity of 76.2%, and specificity of 99%. For the adult group, the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity are 93.6%, 82.1% and 98.5% respectively, whereas for the paediatric radiographs, these are 90.9%, 64.3% and 100% respectively. The current student’s red-dot skills demonstrate a reduced performance in detecting

abnormalities on paediatric radiographs. Re-audit on paediatric radiographs must be carried out soon after student graduation to demonstrate competence on these examinations. A complete re-audit is recommended in a year’s time.

25 REFERRAL

HAVE YOU ‘PAUSED & CHECKED’?

ABOUT TO REFER A PATIENT Society & College of Radiographers

A RADIOTHERAPY IR(ME)R CHECKLIST FOR REFERRERS

IR(ME)R requires all duty holders to comply with their local employer’s procedures. This ‘pause and check’ poster is not designed to replace those procedures but represents a shortened summary of the main checks. They are designed to act as a ready

reminder of the checks that need to be made before any referral is made. The posters are designed in PDF

format to allow for easy downloading and printing. They can then be displayed in the department as required.
