his report will discuss and elaborate upon the author’s observations undertaken during an investigation of the use of ultrasound in detecting miscarriages. This report will include the reasons for miscarriages, the differences
in normal and abnormal pathology, the types of miscarriages and patient pathways following miscarriage. Miscarriage refers to the loss of a pregnancy prior to 20 weeks gestation; this affects
up to one in five women and is the most common complication in pregnancy1
.
OBJECTIVES • To understand the reasons for miscarriages. • To observe the differences in normal pathology and miscarriage pathology.
• To research the types of miscarriages. • To research patient pathways following miscarriage.
