Partners in entertainment True North and Burton Cummings extend
naming rights for historic theatre The former Guess Who frontman will see his name atop the theatre for many years to come
T
rue North Sports and Entertainment along with Burton Cummings announced they have extended the naming rights for the Burton Cummings Tea-
tre which will see the name of the former frontman of the Guess Who reside atop the historic theatre if for at least another 15 years. Te announcement took place at the historic theatre
and was broadcast live on Facebook last month. "We are thrilled to be able to continue our relation-
ship with Burton Cummings and are honoured to have his name – one of Winnipeg’s favourite sons – atop this remarkable theatre," said Kevin Donnelly, senior vice- president, venues and entertainment at True North, during the announcement. The Winnipeg-born singer/songwriter was just as
thrilled. "It's an absolute thrill. I'm honoured and believe me,
folks, I don't take this for granted. I don't take this lightly. I will do my very best," Cummings said Te Burton Cummings Teatre opened in 1907 as the
Walker Teatre, a vaudeville performance venue. Te theatre would bring in some of the world’s most famous performers such as the Marx Brothers, Charlie Chaplin and Bob Hope. In 1945 the theatre was converted into the Odeon Cinema, which was the city’s largest single-screen movie theatre until it closed in 1989. A restoration allowed the theatre to resume functioning
as a live performance venue in 1991, when it was rechris- tened the Walker Teatre, before being rededicated the Burton Cummings Teatre in 2002. Cummings says he has a lot of great memories of the
theatre. “My parents used to come here before I was even born,”
says Cummings. “I skipped out of school to see HELP! at this theatre. I cannot count the number of films I saw
