Natalie Skeltoncontinued frompage 5.

Shewas instrumental in founding theDallasCivicBallet and later the DanceCouncil, andwas elected tomany offices in both organizations and served on bothBoards. Shewas also an enthusiastic supporter of the regional dance festivals that began in the 1950s. I believe she attended nearly every SouthwesternRegional Festival since the first one inAustin in 1963. She also held offices in the two sponsoring organiza- tions – the SouthwesternRegionalBalletAssociation and theNational Association forRegionalBallet (nowRegionalDanceAmerica), and for many years shewas the coordinator between the southwestern group and the national group.

Natalie continued to performwell into hermiddle years, oftenwith Doug.Dougwas still a fine ballroomdancer, and she andDoug occa- sionally taught ballroomclasses together.Natalie andDoug both danced in the firstNutcracker produced by theCivicBallet, also in a 1961 production ofGianCarloMenotti’s TheUnicorn, theGorgon and the Manticore that I choreographed and inwhich I also danced. We all had troublewithMenotti’s tricky rhythms, butwe learned thatDoug, the accountant, was the only onewho could count themcorrectly.

Natalie andmymother became the closest of friends, sowhenmy mother died some 20 years ago I askedNatalie if shewould bemy “understudymother” and she agreed. We talked on the telephone nearly every day after that. And she played that role perfectly.

Many, many people rememberNatalie and her legacies. Nataliewas instrumental in helping to develop a diverse and growing dance com- munity inNorth Texas. This community continues to growbut itwill never be quite the samewithout her.
