Germany’s enchanting Black Forest is brimming with vast expanses of hills, valleys and picturesque rivers

GERMANY German National Tourist Board / EU7310

History, culture and stunning natural beauty combine to create Germany’s dynamic tourism offering. Home to an impressive 41 UNESCO World Heritage sites, there is plenty to pack out any visitor’s itinerary. Take your pick from the architecture of Cologne Cathedral and Wart- burg Castle to iconic places that mark important moments in history, including the Berlin Wall and Brandenburg Gate. The 16-state nation made a strong start to

2016 when, at the World Economic Forum in Swit- zerland, it was named the best country on the planet by the US News & World Report. Tourism numbers support the findings and between Janu- ary and November last year, overnight hotel stays in Germany rose by 2.6 percent to 420 million. The domestic market accounted for 345 million overnight stays, marking a 2.8 percent increase, while foreign tourists totalled 75 million nights and a 1.4 percent growth. In particular, the Bavarian region posted record numbers in 2016, with 90 million beds

booked representing a 3-percent increase on the previous year. Overseas markets that saw an increase in visitors to Germany included Asia, which was up 3.8 percent, the USA, up 2.5 percent, and Europe, which rose 2 percent. Inbound tourism is expected to grow at a

dynamic pace over the next few years to reach 121.5 million international overnight stays by 2030. Meanwhile, there is a fresh focus on attracting business visitors. Hamburg is improving its MICE offering for

2017 with the launch of the Elbphilharmonie Phil- harmonic Hall. The concert hall in the HafenCity quarter houses the 244-room Westin Hotel, which has eight conference rooms and offers visitors excellent views of the city. The capital Berlin continues to cement its

status as Germany’s cultural hub this year with the launch of the Museum of Urban Contempo- rary Art — the world’s first street art museum, as well as the hotly anticipated Frank Gehry- designed Barenboim-Said Akademie, which will train Middle Eastern musicians. Meanwhile, major infrastructure projects

in the pipeline to meet the increasing tourism need include Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which is scheduled to open next year. In terms of new hotel offerings, 2017 will

see the launch of a host of properties includ- ing Provocateur Berlin, Fontenay Hamburg, Moxy Stuttgart Airport, AC Hotel Mainz and Roomers Munich.
