THE FOUNDING OF HEART OF GLASS WAS AN ORGANIC PROCESS AND ONE THAT UNFOLDED OVER ALMOST A TWO-YEAR PERIOD.


During that time we worked with a group of diverse partners to understand the current arts provision in the borough of St Helens and also to assess the current appetite in our communities for all things artistic and cultural.


Our partnership, which is still in place today, includes a sports charity, a housing association, an artist collective, a museum, a theatre, a local authority and a digital arts organisation. We used many and varied routes to engage our community in a shared enquiry and what was quickly revealed was an appetite and a commitment to arts and culture that was not being serviced by ambition and support.


Heart of Glass began in earnest in the summer of 2014, finding its voice and feet quickly over the following months, while building an army of collaborators across the town, welcoming and supporting a range of artists from close to home and farther afield.


We rolled up our sleeves and set to work, and what became clear is that our communities were engaged and civically minded, and that art, like rugby could play a role in bringing our communities together, in achieving a shared goal. In many ways we are just beginning, and yet the beginning has offered so much, but we realise that success and transformation requires time and space, and so it is with pride and confidence that we can share this vision document taking us to 2027 and beyond.
