OE Standards At Replacement Cost

ADOMANI, Inc. outfitted an older Gilroy Unified School District bus in California with an electric motor and batteries. The company now also develops new electrified school buses for Blue Bird.

system, control systems and battery packs that we built in-house from prismatic lithium battery cells.”

Te experiment was successful, and the company relocated to California, where it

converted another Blue Bird Type-D bus for use by Gilroy Unified School District. ADOMANI now electrifies both new and repowered school buses for Blue Bird. Reynolds said a district’s decision over whether to buy a repowered or new electric bus often depends on what funding programs may be available. After all, most states aren’t like California, which literally has hundreds of millions to offer for new electric buses. “Also, since there are significant drivetrain system development costs for each type of

vehicle, we really need a good block of the same make, model and year vehicles, or very similar, to make a repower project economically viable,” Reynolds added. He said converting a bus to electric is also a good time to make other changes. Te company proposed such a suite of refurbishments to the state of California in a project that ultimately ran into funding constraints. “We had planned for low rolling resistance tires, electric HVAC options and a full

switchover to LED lighting, inside and out,” Reynolds said. “Tere is a whole range of options, but each adds cost that needs to be balanced with clear benefits.” Reynolds said he remains passionate about converting diesel to electric. “I have a dream,” he added, “of a huge red barn with an ADOMANI sign on top that is located in a vast green field of grass, where diesel school buses come in one side and emerge from the other end, as clean, zero-emission electric school buses. It could happen.” 
