GARAGE STAR FINALISTS

Anuar Dominguez Mechanic

Bethlehem Central School District Delmar, New York Anuar Dominguez joined the team at Bethlehem Central School District 10 years ago, so his main job has been to prep all of the buses for New York State Department of Transportation inspections. Dominguez presented 277 vehicles for inspection and had only two vehicles fall outside of specifica- tions (OOS). Cyndy Jurewicz, director of transportation for Bethlehem CSD, who nominated Domin- guez, said the district’s DOT passing rate for the 2017-2018 school year was 99.2 percent, while the

OOS rate was only 0.8 percent. Each vehicle is inspected once every six months, and Dominguez presents six buses weekly for DOT inspection. And when not in the garage, he continues to lend a helping hand to those in need. “Anuar also performs community service work,” Jurewicz recalled. “For example, a new family within the district who has a language barrier needed a mechanic and didn’t know anyone. Anuar, who speaks five

languages fluently, volunteered to help the family, labor free.”

Jason Johnson Equipment Service Manager Horseheads Central School District Horseheads, New York

Jason Johnson has been president of the New York Head Mechanic Association and has made its

annual summer seminar one of the largest in the state. Last month’s event in Syracuse featured air brake certification, Cummins engine updates, and new technology and information shared by Blue Bird, IC Bus and Thomas Built Buses. Over 126 school districts from across the state attended. Peter Marini, the head mechanic at Fairport CSD, nominated Johnson. He said Johnson attends all of the state school bus De- partment of Transportation partner meetings, where he represents all districts in the policy discussions. This summer, Johnson also obtained a school bus accident simulator and held training sessions for all first responders in his area. Marini added that Johnson “is always on the go, reviewing ways to make the school bus industry in New York and nationwide even safer.”

Shane Lally Technician / Tech in Charge First Student Norwalk, Connecticut

Since Shane Lally decided on his career path, he has strived to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible. If any training is available, said Vinnie Cappiello, area general manager for First Student, Lally takes full advantage of it. He currently has 40 individual ASE certifications and four ASE Master certifications in automotive, medium heavy duty, school bus and transit. Cappiello, who nominated Lally, reported that he has also earned multiple specialty certifications in European automotive. “He strives to be prepared for whatever problems may arise,” Cappiello added. “His ability to take on any job handed to him, regardless of vehicle type, has been a huge asset, not only to the shop, but to operations that rely on the maintenance team to keep the fleet running. Shane is ready and willing to tackle the harder repairs, while also performing and training others to carry out the vital task of preventive maintenance.”
