Kids By Laurie Malmstrom Jennifer’s major at UCLA is Psychology and early education. “I’ve worked in

radio since I was 6 and felt I’ve really learned the ins-and outs. I was fortunate to have a mentor that guided my experience and I was able to enjoy the perks of radio with many red-carpet celebrity interviews. It took us out of kitchen broadcasting. The freedom of radio provides a way to share ideas without being seen. It allows the lis- tener to interject their imagination” said Jen in a recent interview. Jennifer still plans to be active in her foundation and the FYV program even after graduation. “The Find Your Voice workshop inspires local youth to improve their communication skills, and increase self-esteem all while having fun on the radio and very soon, TV.” You can help by becoming a sponsor. The petite, purple-tipped hair and quiet voice will fool you. Meet Jennifer Smart,

20, a senior at UCLA and founder of the nonprofit Jennifer Smart Foundation. She has been on radio since the age of 6. The only child of Max and Victoria Smart, and home-schooled, Jennifer started JENNiRADIO (JENNiRADIO.com) in 2005 streaming online with music, celebrity shout-outs and snippets about movies and web sites. In addition, she can now be heard on 101.7, KJNi-LP and KKGT 91.9 FM in the Lake Elsinore area. As an LPFM, available only to nonprofits, they are a low wattage, com- munity radio station with limited reach that covers Canyon Hills and Tuscan Hills areas of Lake Elinore with some coverage on the west side of Interstate 15 into Wildomar and most of Menifee. Ms. Smart’s Foundation offers children and teens a way to ‘FIND YOUR VOICE’ through communication seminars that allow the children to pro- duce a 3-hour radio show that is broadcast on JENNiRADIO and the two Lake Elsi- nore radio stations. The ‘Find Your Voice’ Center is located at the Lake Elsinore Outlets at 17600 Collier Avenue, suite G-165. Jennifer Smart started her foundation in 2009 to support charities that are impor-

tant to children. Under the foundation, she created the ‘Find Your Voice’ program which includes one 3-hour group session, where kids learn about radio and commu- nication skills. Kids are provided handouts and homework to prepare for their individ- ual session. In that one-on-one session, they work with mentors to put together a radio program that includes their favorite music, anecdotes, their interests, any causes they support and any issue they want to address. The kids use the program as a plat- form to spread positive messages or a way to have fun and escape from the routine of their daily lives. All programs are recorded and edited and the children are alerted to when their program will air. The ‘Find Your Voice’ workshops are offered and open to local children ages 7 to 18 (sick, healthy and disadvantaged kids). Local busi- nesses are invited to sponsor the kids. As a nonprofit, they do not sell advertising time on the radio or website. The foundation is a nonprofit, 501 (c) (3) public charity. When asked about future plans for the ‘Find Your Voice’ program, Ms. Smart stated “we will be adding TV production workshops in the very near future”. In preparation for the TV production, the suite has been painted with a green screen to provide more pro- duction value to the TV programming by allowing the on-screen talent to be supper- imposed over various backgrounds and scenery. Jennifer is comfortable with being in front of the camera and behind it. She is one of the teacher’s for the “Find Your Voice” program along with mom and dad. Jennifer is a seasoned professional of radio and radio production. The family

started out by doing a nationally-syndicated family and technology talk radio show in 2003. At the age of 8 Jen started interviewing celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Robin Williams and Michael Keaton on red carpets and pop culture was added to the show. In 2007 the family toured the 48 continental United States, sponsored by HP and doing shows from museums, national parks and points of interest. In 2010 the non- profit foundation purchased a former Radio Disney Station in Albuquerque, New Mex- ico. It was in Albuquerque that Jennifer started the ‘Find Your Voice’ program. The foundation sold the New Mexico radio station in 2012 and the family returned to South- ern California. They put the foundation on the waiting list to receive an LPFM from the Federal Communications Commission. They were granted the license in 2015 and 101.7 KJNi-LP went on the air in June.
