theESTABLISHMENT at its Best!

BEST-LOVED WATERING HOLES By TERRY RYAN For this issue of Bounder, I am going to deviate a bit from the

pubs and tavern type establishments. My favourite restaurant, and big supporter of Bounder Magazine, is celebrating 40 years in business! Now if that isn’t an establishment I don’t know what is. A family-run restaurant that has survived 40 years in the business

is almost unheard of. Named after Giovanni Cabotto (John Cabot to me), the restaurant is housed in a heritage building, so designated in 1985 under the Ontario Heritage Act, at 5816 Hazeldean Road. Built in 1868, as a tavern, the building had many lives. In 1871, with the coming of the Central Canada Railway, now CPR, the traffic was reduced to that of a very local nature. In 1910, it was sold to a young physician from Carp who set about creating a country estate named ‘Burlingame Farm’. It was sold again and, in 1919, the farm began raising cattle and shipping milk. In 1926, hydro power made its first appearance on the farm, presenting things, quite literally, ‘in a new light’, and opening the way for the modern conveniences that are now commonplace. In 1978, with the opening of Café Luigi’s, the building was reverted back to its original use over a century ago when it was known as Kemp’s Tavern. In 1982, the building was sold and ‘The Chequers’ restaurant was opened. In 1998, the owners changed the name of the restaurant back to the buildings original name Kemp’s Steakhouse. In May 2003, Vincenzo (Vince to me) Pucci bought ‘Kemp’s Tavern’ and moved his long-established ‘Cabotto’s Restaurant’ to the building. I know that many of you think of hitting Little Italy when you are

in the mood for good Italian food and a nice place to eat, but I urge you to go just a little further to Cabotto’s. Vince and his children, daughter Carmen Narsete, and son Perry Pucci, run a very fine business. They have received numerous awards in recognition of their fine establishment, such as Consumer’s Choice 6 years in a row, CTV’s best Italian Food, and recipient of, or nominee for, numerous People’s Choice Business Awards of the West Ottawa Board of Trade. One visit to their place and you will see (or should I say taste) why I hold this as my favourite restaurant of all time. Very hands on
