CABLE MAINTENANCE & PROTECTION

Precision subsea burial aids cable protection

Global Marine Systems Limited has been installing subsea cables since 1850. Since then, the company has installed more than 300,000 km of cable (23% of the world’s total). The installation of subsea power cables has been a core business activity for over 25 years and the requirements met range from HVDC to HVAC, and from the shallow depths of less than 10m through to deep water of over 6000m.

Q1000 JET TRENCHER

Precision subsea burial of power cables (or indeed umbilicals or pipelines), aids future cable protection. The company employs its Q1000 Jet Trencher to bury cables to a depth of up to 3m at a speed of up to 400m per hour. Operationally rated to a depth of 1000m, the Q1000 is easily configured for use with either tracks or skids to suit the application and it can be deployed for trenching operations on a seabed that ranges from fine sand to firm clay.

This ROV’s cable detection and tracking system results in time-saving, precision burial – reducing the possibility of cable damage during the process. Furthermore, trenching can be carried out both pre- or post-lay as well as simultaneous lay and burial for offshore subsea power cables.

IMPRESSIVE TRACK RECORD The Q1000 was acquired by Global Marine in May 2015 and the ROV has an impressive track record in the power cable market. In 2012 for example, it completed remedial operations for Centrica at the Lincs Wind Farm in the North Sea.
