MAJOR INVESTMENT IN OFFSHORE WIND

Barrier Group, the Wallsend-based international coatings specialist, has made a series of major investments in order to expand its service provision to the growing offshore wind sector.

Through a series of acquisitions and service developments the group is now in a position to offer specialist coatings, metal spraying, passive fire protection, architectural insulation, scaffolding and rope access and technical training. A further group company supplies and installs rubber sealing and clamping products.

OPPORTUNITIES

Opportunities arising from the growing market, particularly the commissioning of offshore substations, which house electricity generated from turbines before exporting it to the main grid, will provide Barrier with the chance to apply its new found capabilities and strengthen the North East of England’s offshore wind supply chain.

Barrier Group was formed in 1975 to carry out painting of structures to be installed as part of the growing North Sea oil industry and has since evolved into a multi-faceted supply chain company, which now serves the offshore oil & gas, nuclear, marine and offshore renewable energy sectors.

It consists of six companies that have completed more than 200 major contracts, totalling millions of square metres of surface protection and has worked for most of the world’s major oil companies.

SERVICES

Aquaseal, one of the companies within the group has a proven track record in the offshore industry and is ideally placed to meet the needs of operators and contractors. In 2014 it supported the Humber Gateway windfarm development when it delivered a neoprene rubber coatings project on support frames for J-Tube & boat landing platforms.

Barrier Group’s most recent acquisition was that of UK Total Solutions Ltd, a rope access specialist, which has demonstrated its commitment to tackling the industry- wide skills gap by launching a training academy in partnership with Gateshead College and the Job Centre.

VALUABLE MARKET

Robert Bowles, Chairman of Barrier Group, said: “We’re always looking for ways to add value to our operations; by introducing complementary businesses to the group, it benefits customers and further strengthens our position in the supply chain.

“The offshore wind industry represents a valuable market that is likely to continue to grow - hopefully with the help of Barrier Group’s six constituent companies.”
