a matter of fact, the fiddle is the main instrument in the fabric of Canada and remains so to this day (the Pembroke Fiddle Contest is evidence of this). In the States the old music was

edged out by Tin Pan Alley and other influences and was pushed into remote rural areas, most notable being the Appalachians and the south in general. There it evolved differently than Canada and was subjected to the blues and many other influences that didn’t exist here. The “Big Bang” in the world of country music came in the nineteen twenties when “The Carter Family and Jimmy Rogers” were revealed to the nation from recordings made in Bristol Va. during a talent search by a record company. This was the start of country music as we know it today! The recent invention of radio

was the vehicle that spread the word of country music (and every other form of music). Suddenly people could hear a symphony orchestra

in their own living room, but many preferred the plaintive sounds of Jimmy Rogers blues tinged songs or the myriad of string bands from the south. Canada was not immune to this virulent country music infection. Through the dirty thirties and the wartime of the forties country groups were cropping up like weeds in a garden. There were western swing bands, Cajun, bluegrass and of course country crooners, and they all came out of the thirties and forties. Shows like WSM’s “Grand Ole Opry, WWVA’s “Wheeling Jamboree” and many others were a staple of listeners across eastern Canada and have remained an influence to this day. In Ottawa there was CFRA’s “Happy Wanderer’s during the fifties and sixties and when television came on the scene shows like Oral Scheer and Cammie Howard were prominent in the fifties. Canada was always a bit of an anomaly. It spawned genuine big stars in the Nashville world like “Hank Snow” (who was heavily

influenced by Jimmy Rogers) but it also produced acts like “Mac Beattie
