SAFE SCHOOL CARPOOLING Students have a few dif-
ferent options to get to and from school. In areas where school bus service is provided, children have an easy way to get to class each day. But if no bus ser- vice is available, students must be driven to school by their parents or neighbors. Busy parents frequently
ban together to form car- pooling teams to ensure students get to school on time. Carpooling is eco- friendly,
convenient and
can foster stronger rela- tionships between stu- dents and the parents of those students. Sharing rides also can be fun for kids and motivate them to get out the door so they can see their friends. Safety should be a prior-
ity for carpoolers, and driv- ers can take the following steps to ensure kids get to school safely. • Know the laws regard-
ing safety seats as they pertain to age, weight and height. • Each child will need to
ride in a seat that is appro- priate and shortcuts should not be taken. If there isn’t room in the vehicle to sit all children comfortably and in the proper restraint, then you must reduce the num- ber of passengers in your vehicle. • Children should ride in the backseat of the vehicle as a priority. Many kids can be safely moved to the front seat around age 13. • Instruct children to re- main in their seats until the
tradition for many people. Excursions to see the fall foliage can be awe-inspir- ing, but drivers must make sure their vehicles can han- dle such jaunts. Tire inspections are es-
sential before hitting the open road. The following are a handful of steps driv- ers can take to ensure their tires are up to the task of fall road trips. • Give tires the eye test.
The eye test can be an ef- fective and quick way to de- tect tire damage. Uneven wear may be indicative of insufficient tire pressure or an alignment problem. Uneven wear also may indicate the vehicle is ex- periencing problems with its steering or suspension. But many times uneven wear can be remedied by a simple tire rotation, so take your vehicle to your me-
chanic if you notice uneven wear. • Look for stowaways.
car has come to a complete stop. Only then should they remove their seatbelts. • Make sure students en-
ter and exit the vehicle on the curb side instead of on the street side. • Instruct passengers to
keep their hands and heads inside of the vehicle. If nec- essary, engage child locks on doors and windows. • Do not leave a child
alone at an empty home in the afternoon. Wait un- til you see a child go inside his or her home before you drive away. • Keep the radio low and
minimize distractions while driving others. Carpooling is a great way
for parents to share the re- sponsibility of getting kids to and from school.
INSPECT TIRES BEFORE FALL ROAD TRIPS Road trips are an autumn
Uneven wear is not the only thing drivers can de- tect with their eyes. In the course of your travels, your tire might have picked up a few stowaways, such as nails and screws that are poking into the tire. If you find any freeloaders, take your car to your mechanic, as your tires may need to be replaced. • Look for cracking or
bulging treads. Cracking or bulging treads or sidewalls can eventually cause a blowout, which can put you and your fellow road trip- pers in serious jeopardy. Cracked or bulging treads or sidewalls indicate tires are worn or weak, so bring your car to your mechanic for an inspection if you dis- cover such problems. • Perform the penny

test. The penny test can help motorists determine if tire treads are worn. To perform the test, insert a penny with Abraham Lin- coln’s head pointing up- ward into the tread. If the tread does not reach the top of Lincoln’s head, your tire’s treads are worn. • Check tire pressure.
Right before you pack up the car to hit the open road, check each of your tires’ pressure, making sure the pressure in each tire is at the level recommended in your owner’s manual. Inflating tires to the proper pressure takes just a min- ute or so, but that minute can protect you and your passengers while also sav- ing you money at the filling station. Properly maintained
tires can go a long way to- ward ensuring the fall road trip season is a success.
