provide very low resistance and thus reduce pressure loss. When manufacturing a standard system, which can accommodate either one or two carrier pipes, there is a homogeneous connection between the polyolefine insulation and the polyethylene casing pipe, which is corrugated during the manufacturing process.

Assuming a normal temperature/

time profile for district heating schemes, the pipes have an expected useful life of more than 50 years. To date, 621,000 Dutch homes have been connected by Flexalen piping.

Installation project Capelle aan den Ijssel is an attractive small town on the Eastern edge of Rotterdam

and the district heating scheme was being installed at an estate of 44 properties known as Rondedams, where the individual houses are on very narrow streets. To ensure, disruption to residents’ lives was kept to a minimum, Thermaflex worked closely with the installer, A. Hak, and energy supplier, Eneco, who were both on site

during the Editor’s visit. Factory-made Flexalen enabled complete segments of piping to be pre-fabricated, coiled up and delivered on site for speedy installation. Once pipes were in the ground and connected to homes, the trench was refilled and compacted before, in the case of Rondedams, block paving was relaid and swept clean.
