100
Growing companies across the Solent region are recognised today in the new SME 100 Growth Index, compiled by The Business Magazine
The index, rating companies with turnover of £15 million and below, is a ranking based on sales growth over a 12-month period.
The combined sales of these top 100 SMEs is nearly £1.2 billion, and they employ almost 11,000 people – evidence of the significant impact that SMEs have in the Solent economy.
Housebuilders, contractors and developers feature strongly in the Growth Index, highlighting the surge in construction work on the South Coast since the economic recovery began.
Poole-headquartered Wyatt Homes lead the way, with growth of over 156%. Wyatt Homes has been building luxury apartments and houses for many years and has won a strong reputation for its waterside developments at Sandbanks. Managing director David Wyatt, who founded the company in 1990, saw turnover rise to £13.71 million in 2014.
MJ Abbott of Salisbury is at number two. With 66.3% growth, MJ Abbott, a family firm, is a specialist contractor to the sports industry, including golf course construction, irrigation, land drainage and civil engineering.
The company was formed in 1965 by Michael Abbott, who was a tractor driver, and after Michael retired from day-to-day operations
in 2005, is now led by managing director Jonathan Abbott.
Last year saw the launch of the original Solent SME 100 and in 2015 the organisers and sponsors decided to switch the focus to growth, compiling an index of the SMEs in the region experiencing the highest levels of turnover growth.
Supported by leading law firm Moore Blatch, accountants and business advisers James Cowper Kreston, and Santander bank – the Growth Index will see SMEs invited to a business breakfast seminar on September 30 at the new Hilton Ageas Bowl, near Southampton. Further events will follow in Portsmouth and Bournemouth.
The Solent SME 100 Growth Index is a listing of private UK businesses that are based in an area that takes in Hampshire, much of Dorset, plus parts of Wiltshire and West Sussex.
