motoring 53 A cat with the cream . . .
I owned a diesel XF a while back and enjoyed owning such an impressive Jag, a car that can hold its own against the German competition. The XF is an admirable performer in all road conditions and feels responsive and positive whether on a motorway or a back road.
That’s down to excellent steering feel, sensible ride – rather than the smash and bounce of some rivals – and a smooth automatic transmission.
Inside, the cabin is classy. In a £33,000 car you would expect upmarket hi-fi, an excellent touch screen sat-nav system, and a Bluetooth phone setup that is child’s play, and you get all this. Plus there’s keyless entry, rear parking camera, cruise control and a very good climate control system.
What’s the difference between an XFR and an XF R-Sport? Quite a lot actually, says The Business Magazine publisher David Murray
Which goes to show that drivers need to know what they are buying nowadays. BMW’s M Sport is not a true M, and Audi’s S-line models are not the same as the S3, S4 and S5.
Confusing? Perhaps. But the consistent point here is that models like the XF R-Sport are aimed at motorists who find the extra sportiness of an R model to their liking, but would prefer to buy an aspirational model that will be decidedly cheaper.
So the XF R-Sport looks like an R, with visual clues including a sporty front bumper, rear spoiler and side sills, plus 19-inch wheels on
the 200 horsepower model. But because it has under the bonnet an economical diesel engine, this car will appeal to anyone who wants to match sportiness with frugality.
This is ideal for company car drivers. Business people who want the benefits of lower emissions and high fuel efficiency can get them in a car that looks like it will travel from A to B with performance to spare.
The looks will seduce your work colleagues, but none of that matters unless the car is also a dream to drive. And since it’s an XF, it is just that.
IF YOU THINK THE PRICE IS GOOD,
Jaguar is very much a marque to be taken seriously. The new XE, launched last month, should sell like hotcakes but the XF, which is routinely updated and improved, looks like it will continue to turn heads and draw admirers for many years to come.
OK, the XF R-Sport does not have the five-litre supercharged performance of the XFR, but it also doesn’t have the £65,500 price tag. The R-Sport is instead a sensible and yet premium XF that would look good in any business executive’s driveway.
Definitely recommended.
