The three values driving SGPB Hambros

Entrepreneurship, innovation and team spirit, are the three values that have been the foundation of the Societe Generale Group since its inception in 1864. These are the driving forces that enables the Group's private banking business to adapt to the rapidly changing world around it and crucially to provide clients with the best service

Societe Generale has always embraced an entrepreneurial spirit dedicated to working alongside forward-thinking and dynamic individuals, being a forerunner in providing finance to the wider economy and a pioneer in banking products and services. The bank helped finance the Eiffel Tower, reflecting a modern and ambitious company eager to support the great projects of its time.

Since its foundation, Societe Generale has maintained close relationships with the City of London, and in April 1871, the first branch outside France was opened, first in Leadenhall Street, and later moving to the heart of the City, just steps away from the Bank of England and the Royal Exchange. After expanding outside France the bank very soon developed an international culture, which, 150 years later is part of its ‘DNA’. In 2013 more than 62% of its employees worked outside France, from 116 nationalities, advising clients and businesses in geographical locations where it had a significant presence.

In 1998 Societe Generale acquired Hambros Bank, and became SGPB Hambros. Warwick Newbury, chairman of SGPB Hambros, who himself celebrates 50 years in banking this year, believes an anniversary is a time both to reflect and to celebrate. Newbury reflected that there have been many good moments since the acquisition and a particular highlight is the way that within the Societe Generale Group "we all pulled together as a team during the difficult times of the financial crisis of 2008-2013". Newbury continued: “I am delighted that pretty much all of the early team of private bankers and many of our vital support staff that joined us either just before or soon after the acquisition of Hambros Bank by Societe Generale in 1998 are still with us, as are most of the key clients which I believe reflects well on how the old Hambros Bank has developed as part of Societe Generale.“

2014 is a year of growth and expansion for SGPB Hambros including the recruitment of new private bankers, introducing a wider range of services and products for the benefit of both existing and prospective clients, and greater synergies with the Societe Generale Group, notably by increasing client access to its specialised investment banking expertise.

In the spirit of innovation SG Private Banking is incorporating a five year IT plan for front and back offices, upgrades of core business systems, and online risk mitigation tools. “The new strategy underlines that our clients remain the focus of our

attention, ensuring that we continue to develop services and products which reflect their different needs and making sure we respond to their specific requirements,“ Eric Barnett CEO recently commented. In 2014 a new advertising campaign was launched adopting a new communication posture based on the idea of quality time, an essential value that SG Private Banking is determined to offer its clients.

The Thames Valley and Solent regional team has expanded with the aim of facilitating local access to the specialist investment management, wealth structuring and credit teams available within the wider Group. Daniel Way and Jeremy Hill joined recently as senior private bankers, working with team head Rebecca Constable, director private banking. The team is working closely with Amanda Alexander, who also recently joined as a senior wealth planner.

At the heart of this team spirit is the Group’s commitment to corporate citizenship and corporate social responsibility. The Group is very focused on a Citizenship Programme which aims to strengthen its role in society and encourage its employees around the world to donate their time to work with the most deprived communities

and facilitate their social integration through education. In true Olympic spirit the final of the Citizen Commitment Games took place in June near Paris. The event enabled €790,000 to be raised for the Group’s partner charities and mobilised in total 4,500 sportsmen and sportswomen, 15,017 supporters and 506 volunteers.

Developing new talent is an integral part of Societe Generale Group’s success in the next 150 years. SGPB Hambros offers financial education to the next generation through the Finance Academy, which is available to clients and business contacts. During this programme, attendees are encouraged to network by providing the environment to establish contacts both within the bank and amongst themselves.
