REACHING REMOTE LOCATIONS

By the nature of our services, technical expertise is also high on our customers’ list of requirements.

How often is V olga-Dnepr call

design and build special l systems for ener

ed upon to oading/handling gy/O&G customers?

Fayçal: It happens quite often as fl ight requests are sent to us whilst said cargo or piece of equipment is either prepared for ocean freight and already conditioned for this or in its fi nal fabrication stage. The aforementioned Xmas tree is a good example. Although the Xmas tree is a set tool in the O & G industry, it comes in a variety of technical specifi cations which may change its size, shape, point of gravity etc, hence a new technical approach is required to determine if it is loadable or what needs to be done to make it loadable.

Many customers request technical support. It is standard practice for our team to fi rst assess the technical aspects of the cargo during the initial quotation request. The cargo dimensions and specifi cations are important to determine if it is loadable and to determine shipment costs and routing.

Tak: We have many examples, including designing a cradle for a gas turbine.

Fayçal: Flights destined to lesser-served airports are usually fl own because of an emergency or simply because this is the best destination for that specifi c project. A good example is Windhoek in Namibia. We performed a series of fl ights for an oil and gas drilling company to Windhoek because it was the best place to stop to get the last crucial drilling equipment integrated and installed onto the vessel before it was taken to its contracted drilling site offshore Angola. The FPSO had the oil drilling equipment and repair kits installed at the wharf in Walvis Bay, which is roughly 200 miles from Windhoek International Airport.

Do ener gy, O&G car characteristics?

Fayçal: Energy and O&G cargoes do have typical characteristics. A good example is Power Packs, which require two An- 124 fl ights to move the entire unit. The main characteristics are (1) Oversize, (2) Heavy weight due to the type of material used (steel etc), and (3) the combination of the oversize piece with the ancillary equipment, such as installation tooling and parts container that need to be transported along with the main piece.

Vladimir: There are four main processes in O&G extraction projects: exploration, well-development, production and site-abandonment. Each one includes dozens of different operations that require special and sometimes even unique equipment. Those are just the extraction works, not to mention oil spill response, subsea exploration and a number of other businesses. O&G cargo is very diverse, and can vary from huge so called “Christmas Trees” or refi nery equipment, to hundreds of barrels with chemicals or cases with pipes, or even explosives. Having access to Volga-Dnepr Group’s diverse aircraft fl eet means we can always provide the most suitable aircraft for every customer requirement.

How confi dent ar e you about the l term potential of the ener for An-124 and IL-76 operations?

Fayçal: Very positive because we are focused on building strong partnerships with the key players in the market, for their current and future requirements.

Graham: The An-124 is now a mature product in the transportation market having been available commercially for nearly 25 years. Many companies already consider the abilities of the aircraft and the time that can be saved within their supply chain. What we have to do is bring assurance that the aircraft will have the longevity in the market place for the next 20 years as if it is available the O&G/Energy markets will use it.

How important is it to maintain cl working r

elationships?

Alexander: Staying in close contact with customers in the energy industry is extremely important in terms of helping us to understand their future needs. The market is changing rapidly so we have

VOLGA-DNEPR AND ANTONOV DESIGN BUREAU SUCCESSFULLY

COMPLETE SHELL AUDIT In July, Volga-Dnepr Airlines and Antonov Design Bureau were successfully audited by SHELL Aircraft Group for the Shell Oil Company. Thorough checks were completed of both airlines before the approval was granted.

The audit follows the initial awarding of a project to operate a multi-fl ight programme moving various plants to Iraq. An-124 aircraft in the two airline’s fl eets will be allocated to this programme from September through to December/January 2015. The project involves technical consulting and assistance as well as overall project management for the main customer.

Both companies are proud to have met SHELL’s strict standards. SHELL Aircraft Group is one of the leading entities in the world for airline operating audits and stringent safety checks.
