cargo Project 1
ELC’s technical design specialists were tasked with producing a special frame for the carriage of two ship’s impellers, based on the technical cad drawings of the cargo supplied by the customer. Once the designs were approved, a local fabricating company was used to laser cut the parts and assemble the intricate frame. Both frames were produced within two weeks and trucked overnight to Vatry in France from the UK in time for the impellers’ An-124 fl ight.
The impellers were loaded onto the aircraft using cranes attached to the frames. Tefl on was the material used for the frame as the Impellers were loaded upright and then needed to rotate onto the frame bed before being clamped tight.
Project 2
When a customer needed to transport two transformers each weighing 114 tons from Tehran to Dushanbe, moving the cargo by land was ruled out because of both geographical and political challenges.
However, a number of factors also prevented the transformers from being carried on the An-124-100 freighter too:
1. Heavy weight spread over a small length of the supporting surface
2. The height of the transformers meant that there was no space to use handling/loading equipment under the cargo
TO MOVE A COMPLEX LOAD -
ASK OUR ADVICE.
NEED
3. The height also prevented a transport platform which could have distributed the load to the required minimum length from being used
4. The cargo had an Insuffi cient number of lashing/mooring points
The ELC team’s solution was to produce a customised engineering design that distributed the weight of
the load on the cargo fl oor without increasing the height of the cargo. It also ensured the correct lashing of the cargo during the fl ight, and was designed to minimise the weight of the structure. Using 3D drawings from the customer, Volga-Dnepr’s engineers designed a special truss using computer generated three- dimensional design.
The frame was produced in Tehran under the guidance of Volga-Dnepr specialists who were present in Iran to oversee the manufacturing process.

WHERE THERE’S ELC, THERE’S ALWAYS A WAY TO MOVE YOUR CARGO
Volga-Dnepr Group’s Engineering & Logistics Centre (ELC) was created to ‘go the extra mile’ for customers. Its team of specialists can manage complete end-to-end logistics projects, help with specifi c customer requirements to satisfy part of their supply chain requirements or design and engineer frames and loading systems that enable heavy and outsize cargoes to be transported by air cargo.
