The Maritime Museum is the home of the tall ship Friends Good Will, which was fi rst launched in 1811. The ship served as both a merchant ship and, during the War of 1812, as a man- o-war. Today you and your family can experience sailing upon this graceful schooner. Special kid-friendly cruises utilize a pirate theme. All cruises are out into the open waters of Lake Michigan. Cruises range from $35 to $42, depending on time of day.

Sleep With the Fishes A favorite activity at many large museums and zoos is having the opportunity for a sleepover with after- hours access to the exhibits. One very special example is spending the night sleeping with

the fi shes at the Monterey Bay Aquarium (
www.montereybayaquarium.org), in Monterey Bay, CA. This world-class aquarium provides educational opportuni- ties for the whole family on the world of aquatic creatures and their habitats. The overnight program allows children fi ve and older and their families to experience the aquarium in a very personal way and includes special educational programs, live music and a bedtime nature movie. Then it is time to bed down next to their favorite fi shes. The program is available on select summer nights and requires a reservation. Cost is $95.
Educational vacation and destination day trips abound. Check out your local museums, zoos and historical sites. Search the Internet for tourism sites for your state or those nearby. Or pack up your car and head down the highway. Visit a gold mine or historical village, or explore natural caves. Learning with your kids can be the best summer adventure of all.
