Fishing industry focus for Bartons Marine Solicitors Advertising feature

olicitors from the niche Marine Law Department of South Hams based Bartons have recently completed their training as commercial fishermen, giving them a unique insight into the practical challenges faced on a daily basis by those within the fishing industry. Led by Managing Director, Lee Hassall, Bartons’ marine team has built up an enviable reputation amongst the fishing industry over the last fifteen years, dealing with local and inter- national personal injury, sale and purchase and professional negligence cases, as well as working closely alongside insur- ers, P & I clubs (Protection & Indemnity) and yacht owners. Bartons’ marine department is recognised in Chambers Solicitors Guide as ‘highly focused on the industry sector and very capable of understanding the issues at stake’, whilst Lee is recognised for his ‘sound profile in insurance and casualty matters and as a solution orientated, pragmatic lawyer’. He is also a Director of the British Marine Federation (SW) Ltd. However, it’s the team’s commitment to hands on training and experience which sets them apart from other marine solicitors. Gaining an on-board insight into the fishing industry began three years ago when Lee took part in two long haul fishing expeditions, including a month long trip in the Barents Sea on board the 50m Norwegian long-liner, MFV ‘CARISMA STAR’ and a week as a deck-hand on the Brixham scalloper, MFV ‘VAN DJICK’. He explains, “We have many years’ experience as solicitors in dealing with the fishing industry but nothing can prepare you for what life at sea is actually like. Taking part in these trips has given me a whole new perspective and understand- ing of the fishing industry which is invaluable when dealing with marine cases.”

S

Director Jo Pummery adds, “Much of our work in the

industry involves personal injury claims and having first hand experience of the procedures and working practices on-board gives us valuable insight when investigating cases.” As well as qualifying as commercial crew members for the fishing industry, solicitor advocate Howard Quinlivan and ma- rine solicitors, Cory Cuff and Jo Pummery have also recently qualified as RYA day skippers and are now working towards their Yachtmaster qualifications.
