HUMAN ERROR CAUSES SICKENING FUMES AT CANADIAN FACILITY

Fumes that sickened dozens of people at a TraveLodge in Ottowa, Canada recently were as a result of a human error. An employee at a wet leisure facility attached to the hotel incorrectly added hydrochloric acid instead of chlorine to a hot tub. This released chlorine gas to the air. Ottawa paramedics treated 54 people for exposure to the fumes at the indoor waterpark, and took three to hospital for treatment. They were all later released. Most of the patients were vomiting or having trouble breathing. A contractor is now reviewing both the equipment and the staff training at the facility.

Paddling Pool Rules Come Into Effect In Australia

And New Zealand The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), in partnership with state and territory consumer protection agencies, will be enforcing a new mandatory safety standard for portable pools and their retail packaging (including mandatory safety warnings) from 30 March. The warning labels will also draw attention to state and territory fencing laws for pools, including inflatable and portable pools.

The new standard has come following the release of recent statistics showed a high risk of drowning for children under the age of five.

Meanwhile in New Zealand, new rules have been clarified around the fencing of paddling pools. The new law would mean any pool, including portable

and inflatable pools where the water is more than 30 centimetres deep, won’t be allowed to stay as a permanent fixture. “You can leave it up for a week, you can have it up for a month, you can take it to the beach, you can put it up in the backyard,” said Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson adding: “But we’re just saying please don’t leave a more than 30 cm portable pool up on an on-going basis. Empty it and fill it up again when you want to use it.” He made the comments while announcing changes to the 1987 Fencing of Swimming Pools Act which, if passed next year, will introduce a new enforcement regime, including $500 fines for those who don’t fence off their pools properly. The new law will mean any pool where the water is more than 30cm deep – even portable and inflatable pools – will need to be fenced off if they are left up permanently. Under current laws, pools deeper than 40cm have to be fenced, but officials say the requirements have not been clear and are not happening in many cases.

Interbad Sets Itself High Targets For 2014 2012 was a record year for interbad, the

international trade fair for swimming pools, saunas and spas with over 500 exhibitors showcasing themselves at Messe Stuttgart, 35% of whom came from abroad. On the four event days the interbad event organisers, the German Association for the Recreational and Medicinal Bath Industry and Messe Stuttgart, registered 15,423 visitors from 53 countries. The exhibitors were particularly pleased with the large number of decision-makers among the visitors and the increase in the shows international character. This has set a high standard for the upcoming interbad, which takes place from 21 to 24 October 2014. A challenge for Ulrich Kromer, Managing Director of Messe

Stuttgart, as he declared at a press conference in Hamburg: “It will not be easy to surpass the success of the previous interbad, but it is not an impossible task. The combination of public and private swimming pool and sauna area is one of the positive features of interbad. With its high density of premium providers, it also represents excellent quality. And not forgetting: interbad showcases the largest sauna offering worldwide.” With its coherent mixture of a trade fair, a congress and an extensive framework programme, interbad will provide an ideal setting to exchange professional experiences and information, carry out networking and experience the latest trends in swimming pools, saunas and wellness.
