MOTORING SMART FORTWO CONTINUED......... Standard kit includes air-conditioning, alloy
wheels, Bluetooth, electric windows, steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles, stability control and a semi-automatic gearbox. The car looks more cute and the
manufacturer says it ‘puts a smile on your face’, a claim you cannot deny. It is a strict two-seater, but surprisingly roomy for the occupants, and with wide doors for easy access. The boot, like on most city cars, is small but at 220 litres still copes with light shopping.

LUX AWD Sleek and stylish were not always the first words to spring to mind when describing a Volvo, but times have changed. The Swedish car maker has a revitalised image after several years of hard work to attract younger more aspirational buyers. Rather cleverly they have managed to retain many of their traditional buyers too. Despite those rakish lines the volvo v60 offers a spacious
interior and despite a low roofline it’s amazing what you can actually get into the load area . Controls are simple and straightforward and where you would expect them to be with no hidden annoyances. Standard fare is excellent with such items as climate, power windows, power mirrors, cruise control, height and lumbar adjustment on both front seats, Bluetooth, leather upholstery, sports alloys, front and rear reading lights, aluminium highlights, floor mats, remote central locking and power steering. On the road the 2.4-litre, 5-cylinder diesel engine develops 215 hp and is a relatively smooth and refined

It’

appreciate its quirky appearance, good fuel economy and the tiny space it requires in which to park.
The three-cylinder engine is located behind the seats and so is a tad more noisy than a conventional city car. The semi-auto gearbox saves a lot of work in stop-start city traffic, but tends to be over-busy, changing too frequently. However, the combination of small engine and semi-auto gears proves good for fuel economy, with the smart fortwo returning 57.6 mpg combined. Top speed, rather academic in this type of car, is 90 mph and the 0-60 mph time is quite decent at 10.7 seconds. The fortwo is comfortable, with excellent seating, and while the ride is firm, it is not jarring.
affair. It gives decent performance too with a 143 mph maximum speed and the benchmark 60 mph passed in 7.3 seconds. Economy is excellent and in an extremely busy week I averaged an impressive 43 mpg. Being an R-Design model you gain

tyres and larger wheels. Whilst this makes the car a tad more firmly sprung the resulting ride is a better compromise than you might expect. Handling is sharp but there is still enough compliance in the suspension to soak up the rougher surfaces. The Geartronic models are a joy. There tends to be so much traffic on the roads these days and automatics are so good, that having a manual car seems increasingly like hard work. The 6-speed Geartronic offers quick and smooth changes with paddle shifts on the steering wheel for those who want to ‘play’ on more interesting cross country routes. v60 models are great value although higher up the range the prices do start to climb. my test model, the D5 R Design, costs £36,445 with options adding over £5,000 to the final price tag.
