Swimming Trust Launches New Appeal

THE SWIMMING TRUST WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1996 AS AN INDEPENDENT CHARITY DEDICATED TO GETTING MORE PEOPLE SWIMMING IN SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENTS. THE FOCUS OF THEIR WORK IS TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF LIVES LOST EACH YEAR BY DROWNING AND HELP PEOPLE ENJOY A SKILL FOR A LIFETIME.

T

o help achieve these objectives the Trust has launched the Swimming Teacher Education Fund to help more swimming teachers become qualified so that they can use their skills in schools, clubs and community groups. Despite swimming being a curriculum subject with a target that every 7-11 year old should

Richard Lamburn of the STA

be able to swim 25m by the time they go to secondary school, it is not separately funded. This has resulted in almost one million children being unsafe in and around water today. Years of failing to meet the target now means that around 20% of adults are unable to swim.

For schools, the chief barrier is cost – 44% of schools say they

don’t have the budget to meet the cost of training their teachers to teach swimming.

Developing a world-class workforce of qualified,

enthusiastic swimming teachers is essential if young people are going to have the opportunity to learn and enjoy swimming throughout their lives. The Fund will have an immediate

and positive effect on the way swimming is taught in schools and provides much needed support in swimming clubs and community groups.

Providing this training will also have an impact on the lives of the people being trained. The skills they develop are in demand and for many will provide an opportunity to find work and help their families. Dennis Yeoman, Chairman of the Swimming Trust says: “The fund will allow us to work with partners such as local authorities and community groups and provide bursaries that will help reduce the cost of training. This model is well established and we have already helped around 200 people become qualified swimming teachers. “The Swimming Teacher Education Fund is a great opportunity for businesses and individuals all over the country to invest in the future of British sport and help make a difference to countless lives for generations.” For more information about the Swimming Teacher Education Fund and the Swimming Trust contact Brian DeVal, Honorary Secretary at secretary. swimmingtrust@swimming.org You can find more information about the Swimming Teacher Education Fund at www. swimmingtrust.com
