POOL & SPA INDUSTRY Happy New Year!

AFTER A BUSY AND SUCCESSFUL YEAR, BSPF MANAGING DIRECTOR CHRIS HAYES LOOKS AHEAD TO WHAT 2014 HAS IN STORE FOR THE INDUSTRY

pool standards. Due to the need to have versions in French and German (as well as English) and due to the voting procedure, the completed standards are unlikely to be ready until 2015. London will be hosting the meeting of TC 402 WG2 on EN16713 (parts 1 to 3) relating to swimming pool filtration, circulation and treatment. The public consultation (CEN Public Enquiry) will begin in February and the deadline for comments is due by July, so ensure that you have your say.

Following a recent meeting in Sweden, it is looking more likely that the domestic hot tub and spa standards will receive the financial support necessary to begin the work, with the first official meeting being discussed for June, subject to funding. There is also to be a new standard for small pools. The work of BISHTA (and SPATA for the pool standards) is vital to give our industry a voice in these discussions. The voice of the Trade Associations is also being heard with the revision of the Management of Spa Pools publication. This document is a vital piece of advice provided through Public Health England and HSE for commercial spas and also hot tubs in business settings, such as holiday venues. There may also be some pertinent advice following the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in Stoke on Trent that killed two people. Consultation has just finished on the use of hydrogen peroxide (and some other

ue to the hard work of colleagues around Europe, it is looking very likely that 2014 will see the final drafting of the domestic swimming

chemicals) as explosive precursors for terrorists and we await the outcome to determine whether hydrogen peroxide above 12% volume can be sold directly to end users. Business to business sales are not affected by this impending legislation due to come into force this autumn. The desire is for some kind of licensing or registration scheme, but this is by no means certain. SPATA will be hosting a series of regional meetings in February and March, please watch out for the weekly e-newsletter for details of where they are. Some of the key topics to be covered, include ‘how to get the most from your inspection’, ‘European Standards and how they affect your business’, etc. The incoming BSPF President, Issy Rickards Sanger has confirmed that she will be hosting her Weekend on 19 to 21 September in Somerset and more details will be available at SPATEX. Jamie Adams has recently celebrated hosting his Past President’s Meal in Exeter and the attendees had a lovely time relaxing in the beautiful surroundings of the Cathedral Lounge at the ABode Hotel. In terms of SPATEX 2014, the new venue at the Ricoh Arena promises to provide a very exciting mixture of purpose built exhibition space, with unique entertainment such as the Casino and I am sure that every visitor will have a productive time seeing over 100 suppliers at the show. I am very grateful to all the exhibitors for their support and would like to thank Penny Farmer, Michele Bridle and Helen Mulingani for their determination, ably supported by the SPATEX directors. During SPATEX, the SPATA and BISHTA

Awards will be held in the E-on Suite at the Ricoh Arena. Along with comedian Aaron James, the music will be provided by The Junos. Everyone coming to the show is very welcome to attend this industry event. If you would like to attend this event (black tie is optional) please contact the office to confirm your booking and tickets are priced at just £59.95 + VAT per person. Once again I’d like to say a huge thank you to all

of the sponsors for supporting this event, their logos are displayed below. During 2014, there will be renewed work on promoting the industry to generate more demand for our goods and services. Both BISHTA and SPATA will be increasing their focus on the end user by the redesigns of the respective websites to reach out more to this audience. The important information and resources for members will continue to be provided, as part of an overall package that will increasingly see more information for clients.

Good luck with your preparations for the year. SPN
