As the holidays approach, you should have received and are enjoying our 75th Anniversary Commemorative Yearbook, published in time for this year’s Leadership Conference. I hope you will take the time to read all the articles, but particularly to focus on the short history of trucking in Arizona. Our industry and our association have endured and survived some incredible times throughout our history, and I think it’s important to remember that as we look to the future.

This has been quite a year for our Association, beginning with events to celebrate our 75th Anniversary and ending with a change in leadership as Karen Rasmussen departs after nearly 12 years as our President & CEO. Just before our Conference, Karen notified the Board (and I announced at the Annual Membership Meeting) that she had accepted the position of President & CEO of Help Inc., the public-private partnership that owns and runs PrePass, the largest truck pre-clearance program in North America.

Knowing Karen and how much she loves ATA and its members, I can tell you that the decision to leave ATA did not come easily for her. But with her life-long interest in and commitment to improving truck safety, and her belief that technology can help all motor carriers be safer and more efficient, I think she is a natural to lead Help and its technology programs into the future. She will remain involved in ATA as a member – Help Inc. has been an allied member of ATA since 1995!

An affiliate of American Trucking Associations, Inc.

Arizona Trucking Association (ATA) is an Arizona corporation of trucking companies and private carrier fleets, and businesses that serve or supply the trucking industry. ATA serves these companies as a

governmental affairs representative before legislative, regulatory, and executive branches of government on issues that affect the trucking industry. ATA also provides training and education, safety compliance services, and title and registration services. For more information, contact us at: Arizona Trucking Association, 7500 W. Madison St. Tolleson, AZ 85353, Phone: 602.850.6000 Fax: 602.252.8008, web: www.arizonatrucking.com

At the Annual Meeting, I also appointed a Search Committee to begin screening and interviewing potential candidates for ATA. Joining me on the Committee are Immediate Past Chairman Collin Stewart (Stewart Transport); Vice Chairman Bart Wilson (On Time Express); Larry Woolson (Transport Capacity Solutions LLC); Dave Berry (Swift Transportation); Mark Doughty (ContractorManagement Services); and Dave Williams (Knight Transportation).

As I write this, we have interviewed a number of candidates but have not yet settled on a list of finalists. While the Committee, the Board of Directors and I want to find and recruit a new CEO as soon as possible, we also want to find the right candidate.

In the meantime, I want you to know that ATA and the Arizona Transportation Education Foundation are positioned to continue moving the trucking industry forward. We hope to continue our nationally recognized reputation and innovative leadership in truck safety, and I can assure you that the Board of Directors, the staff and I are fully committed to providing the quality service and benefits that ATA members expect from their association.

I look forward to another exciting year as your Chairman. So, Happy New Year and best wishes for a safe, productive and peaceful 2013!
