Day 2 – Safety and the Economy
DPS Sgt. Eloy Ramirez and wife Ana show off his 2012 Commercial Officer of the Year Award. Eloy was recognized by DPS and ATA for starting the D.A.R.T. program. The acronym stands for Driver Awareness Regulation Training, offered periodically at truck stops and rest areas as a way for truck drivers to get help from DPS commercial officers on logbooks and other regulatory questions without penalty.
Supporters congratulate and pose with Sgt. Ramirez. Left to right: Maj. Mark Savage; DPS Capt. Ken Hunter; Lt. Col. Jamie McGuffin; ATA Chairman George Cravens; Sgt. Ramirez; Becky Thiessen, Vice Chair of ATA’s Safety & Maintenance Council, and Maj. Brian Wilcox.
Major Mark Savage, guest speaker at the Signature Safety Series breakfast, talks with ATA Chairman Mike Card. Savage is the International President of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and the head of commercial vehicle enforcement for the State of Colorado.
University of Arizona award-winning economist Dr. Gerry Swanson said no matter who wins the election, economic growth depends on dealing with the national debt, and cautioned that the global economy will largely determine the pace of growth.
Steve Johnson (Jonesco Trucking) and Matt Planeta (National Truck Services Group) visit during a break from the Friday business session.
“A profitable future is out there…somewhere,” says American Trucking Associations Vice President and Chief Economist Bob Costello. Costello said growth would continue to be slow through the first two quarters of 2013 but predicted a bright future for trucking.
