EXCENTIALS Excential Butycoat: Slow- release sodium butyrate Since the EU ban on the use of in-feed antibiotics (AGP´s) in livestock, organics acids (OA) have been found to be a valuable alternative. Within OA, short chain fatty acids (SCFA) are particularly important. Butyrate has a strong bactericidal effect, stimulates villus growth while inhibiting apoptosis. Non-protected OA are absorbed in the upper parts of the GIT, debilitating their action in the large intestines. Microencapsulation of Excential Butycoat ensures release and bioactivity of butyrate throughout the whole GIT, modulating microflora and targeting pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella, but moreover improving villi structure in the small intestines and delivery of energy in colonic epithelial cells. Rao, 2011 (IPME Pune, India) evaluated several feeding
strategies showing improved broiler performance (2.5% and 4%) and decreased mortality when feeding Excential Butycoat alone or combined with AGP´s compared with negative control. A farm trial with 284,831 one-day-old chickens was carried
out in Mexico. Butycoat was compared against a positive control (with AGP´s). Excential Butycoat improved health and growth performance of broilers. An economic benefit of 9:1 USD (ROI) was achieved computing decreased mortality and improvement in FCR. In broiler breeders, peak laying is increased and better laying persistency can be noticed. In addition, feed conversion and egg quality are improved. In piglets Excential Butycoat has consistent results in production
performance improvement as well as reduction of diarrhoea. Latest insights show good application in sow nutrition, where Excential Butycoat seems to improve milk quality, leading to higher litter weights at weaning.
