30 years of sports at the grassroots level

• A figure skater without lessons. • A hockey player without registration.

• A soccer team without a trip. Not anymore. Now these kids can make it.

For more than 30 years, countless numbers of sports-minded youth have had chances they might only have dreamed of thanks to the Ottawa Nepean Canadians Sports Club (ONCSC). It has turned “can’t” into “can”.

The ONCSC started with a debt of $4,500 back in the early 80s. Now it donates more than $50,000 to amateur sports groups and individuals annually. It does this through public donations and a huge contingent of dedicated volunteers. The money has come from raffles, beer gardens, barbecues, bingos and much more.

The creation of the ONCSC was the vision of a bunch of guys, some of whom were then barely out of their teens themselves. They were determined that sports should not be closed to youth because of a lack of money. Such a vision, they declared, could only be made possible by volunteers. No one would receive a salary or honorarium. They would do it because the need was great and because it was the right thing to do.

Now, 30 years later, it’s going stronger than anyone could have anticipated. It gives back to the community over and over, not just to teams and individual young athletes but to the Howard Darwin scholarship program, in honour of former director Howard Darwin, a member of the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame.

With your help, the Club will keep saying “You can” to young people and local sports for another 30 years – and beyond.
