OUTDOORS GUY JEFF MORRISON Time for turkeys and trout Whether your outdoor pursuits involve

fins or feathers, there is no denying spring’s magical effect on your psyche. Be it turkey or be it trout, this is the time of year when it comes together in a big way. I have yet to partake in Eastern

Ontario’s spring turkey hunt, (on my “bucket” shortlist, though) but spring trout fishing is my early-season passion.

In a tradition going back 24 years,

my Dad, brothers-in-law and I spend five quality days in the sphagnum moss-laden landscape of Northern Quebec in search of the elusive Salvelinus fontinalis. Rowing the old canoe around Lac Perdu

while soaking-in the “awesomeness” of the north woods, my ultimate goal is to catch giant natural brookies. With the grace of the Almighty himself and perhaps a bit of luck, we have somehow managed to keep a trophy trout lake hidden from the rest of the world. Spending time on secluded, off-the- beaten-path waters each spring is the closest thing to “born again” I’ve discovered yet. Regardless of what activity you enjoy

during this time of rebirth, there is that mystical quality of the Great Outdoors to get your adrenaline flowing.

ACTION UP THE VALLEY Hunting, fishing and firearms abound in the ominous Ottawa Valley! This year, the Renfrew Gun and Hunting Show returns to the Renfrew Armouries on March 9 and 10, featuring more than 100 tables of gun and hunting supplies. This show is a must-do for firearms enthusiasts, with prize draws and even more exhibitors on the upper level. The ever-popular Valley Fishing and

Outdoors Show is another classic event at this time of year, drawing local sportsmen
