LIFE

A Superior Homecoming

the Toronto area on summer vacations. The beauty of this drive is amazing. We arrived in Terrace on Friday

morning and checked into the Red Dog Inn www.reddoginn.ca and then spent the afternoon driving around, checking out the houses that I lived in as a youngster when my dad worked at the Kimberly-Clarke pulp mill and my mom worked at the Terrace Bay Motor Hotel. The hotel is gone and the mill is

waiting for a fresh start-up with new owners in the fall. Things do change over 40-odd years. We went to the Rec Centre where they have a pictorial archive of past years from the time Terrace Bay was built to the present. Seeing pictures of our family members as hockey players, and other sports- related photos, was a very moving experience for me. We headed down to the boat launch

at the mouth of the Aquasabon River to have a look around. Lake Superior was angry. Two- to three-metre waves were crashing onto the beach as a group of fisherman with 16-ft. boats impatiently waited for the wind to change so they could get out on the water. We weren’t scheduled to embark

We were going home! And not

just to see the sights and look up old school pals. My brother, Jerry, and a couple of

buds and I were going on a fishing adventure out of Terrace Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. The bait for the trip had been

cast in July when Jerry and his wife took a short vacation up north and, through an old pal, Pat Corrigan, had the opportunity to take a day excursion out to the Slate Islands with charter captain Gary Salesse of Northern Phin Charters (http://www. northerncharters.ca ). I had been hearing about Slate

Island lake trout fishing from my Dad for years, and when Gary told Jerry, “You just have to come back to fish trout at the end of May next year”, the hook was set. I was born in Terrace Bay, but

I hadn’t been there for 40-some years. My love of fishing and the old

memories of lakers and specs made it a no-brainer when Jerry asked me if I would be interested in a trip home to fish. And the planning started. We

would be joined by my good friend Bill Neilson, owner of TimberRun Golf Club in Lanark (www. timberrungolfclub.com ) and Jerry’s long time fishing buddy, Brian Shepherd. The plan was to head out on the

16-hour drive on the May 24 and arrive in Terrace Bay on the 25th

after

a stay in Sault Ste. Marie the first night. Driving up north on Highway

17 and along the shores of Lake Superior brought back a lot of great memories. The blue waters and sandy beaches of Batchawana Bay, the giant Canada Goose at Wawa and the big thermometer at White River reminded me of the times we drove with our parents from Terrace Bay to www.bounder.ca

until the following morning, so it was back up to the Red Dog to meet Gary. He assured us that the lake would calm down by morning and that his 26-foot SeaSwirl Striper charter boat was safe and ready to go. Saturday morning broke clear and

cool and we met Gary down at the mouth of the river around nine a.m. Within a few minutes, we had loaded all our gear and ourselves onboard the spotless white SeaSwirl for our four-day Slate Island adventure. Gary effortlessly navigated the narrow river mouth, and after a 40-min. run, we arrived at the entrance to these beautiful islands. The Slate Islands, truly an

archipelago, was created by a meteor crashing into Lake Superior. The meteor pushed up the solid rock bottom of Lake Superior to form an interior harbour within the main island. It is a deep blue, calm lake with a western and eastern entrance from the main lake.
