Courts for Kids Group Returns from Uganda

A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS traveled to Uganda as part of the Courts for Kids program led by Judy Van Raalte, Ph.D., professor of psychology and codirector of the athletic counseling program this past winter. The group, comprised mostly of Springfield College students, traveled to the newly opened Lira Integrated University to build basketball courts under the guidance of the school’s headmaster, Beatrice Ayruru Byruhuanga. The trip began after Van Raalte was approached by one of her graduate students, Jens Omli, who traveled to Uganda and was intrigued by Byruhuanga and her work in

creating a positive educational environment for boys and girls.

The group worked from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, using car headlights after dark because electricity was intermittent. They were assisted by people from the village, including a group of prisoners. While the group was in Uganda, it provided AIDS and life skills education to teachers, and discussed HIV/AIDS and other health matters with young people. They completed one court; two remain under construction pending funding to purchase concrete. Information is available at courtsforkids.org.
