CLASS NOTES AND NEWS
Yves Singletary ’11 By Caitlin Penndorf, Editorial Assistant
CONSISTENCY, PATIENCE, AND STRONG CONVICTIONS. Those are the traits Yves Singletary ’11 feels make a strong role model. And he would know, since he’s taken on that responsibility for many of the youth of Brockton, Mass. Singletary has been volunteering for as long as he can remember. Beginning at a young age participating in youth groups, the desire to give back has followed him to his current position as a youth development fellow for the
in their community. Yves Singletary
AmeriCorps Massachusetts Promise Fellowship program. His year-long service as a fellow focuses on working with young people and allowing them to realize their own potential. “I try to get them to understand that no matter how much others believe in them, they have to make the investment in their futures themselves,” said Singletary.
Singletary has had opportunity to work with youth of the city in multiple ways since he began his service. He’s a coordinator for the Brockton Youth Council, which is a group of 20 young people, ages 13-21, who work with city officials and community leaders to encourage young people to be more civically engaged
Additionally, he’s worked with students from the B.B. Russell School in Brockton to organize the Mayor’s Youth Summit, an event that brings young people from all over the city together to discuss local issues and possible solutions, which they then share with the mayor during an open forum. The students were responsible for the coordination and implementation of the event, a first for many of them.
“I believe that education comes in many forms, not just what you learn in the classroom. I want my youth to be engaged in what’s going on in their community,” said Singletary. Singletary’s fellowship will end in August, but his commit- ment to volunteerism will not. He plans to look for a career that will allow him to continue to work and impact the community in a leadership role.
“I don’t think people should be surprised in the future to one day hear “let’s please welcome our Massachusetts State Governor, the Honorable Yves Singletary’,” he said.1
