Naomi Graves Delivers Humanics Lecture, Redington Announced as Successor
DISTINGUISHED SPRINGFIELD PROFESSOR OF HUMANICS and head women’s basketball coach Naomi Graves presented the annual Humanics lecture in April. Her lecture focused on the idea of stewardship within the teacher-coach model. Charles Redington, Ph.D., professor of biology, was named the 2012-2013 Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics at the lecture. The two will be featured in an upcoming issue of Triangle.
Jean Wyld and Charles Redington College Hosts Teachers for Anti-bullying Workshop
ANTI-BULLYING EXPERT Elizabeth Englander, Ph.D., founder and director of the Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center, conducted a workshop on the campus for approximately 150 local educators, school counselors, Springfield College faculty, and pre-service teachers. During the session “Bullying and Cyberbullying Education and Prevention,” Englander presented appropriate responses and interventions. She is a nationally recognized researcher and trainer in the field of childhood aggression, bullying, and cyberbullying. The workshop was sponsored by the Springfield College Office of Educator Preparation and Licensure, directed by Linda Davis-Delano, Ph.D.
Career Center Acknowledged for Work with LGBT Students
THE SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE CAREER CENTER has received gold certification from OUT for Work (OFW), an organization that acts as a complimentary component in the transition between academia and the work force for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students. OFW focuses on initiating, developing, and implementing career plans through different programs and services.
Gold certification is the highest ranking and is based on the tools, resources, and LGBTQ materials available to students, as well as how open the career center is to host or attend LGBTQ and Ally career conferences.
Springfield College Alumnus Honored
LIEUTENANT COMMANDER Steve Popielarz ’82, G’84, was the recipient of this year’s Charles J. Redmond Distinguished Alumni Award, given by the Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies on April 20. Popielarz serves as an aerospace physiologist in the United States Navy. He received a bachelor’s degree in athletic training, a master’s degree in sports injury management, and a certificate of advance study from Springfield College.

English Professor Earns Artist Fellowship Grant
REBECCA LARTIGUE, PH.D., associate professor of English, was awarded a Springfield artist fellowship grant, sponsored by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. In application to the Springfield Cultural Council, Lartigue submitted the prologue of her finished novel manuscript entitled The Snake in the Boot, as well as some of her recent short fiction. Lartigue’s grant will support her fiction writing, which often focuses on medieval settings, or, in the cases of her short story work, fantasy mixed with contemporary settings.

MSW Classes Expanded at Hospital
CENTRAL MASSACHUSETTS residents interested in earning a master’s degree in social work will have a new opportunity close to home beginning in September 2012. The Springfield College School of Social Work (SSW) will expand its program at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester and will offer a full range of courses there on weekends. Students will be able to complete the program in three years.
It features a concentration in advanced generalist practice, which offers ideal preparation for direct practice, group work, community development and organization, and administration in a wide variety of settings.
